great answers,,,I think its like the this,,,the best ones are made by ARMALITE,,,next is BUSHMASTER,,,then rock river arms ,,then D.P.M.S,,then oylimpic arms,, COLT uses large pins in some of the trigger parts so they ,do not interchange with the above brands,,,,COLT makes the government contract M-16,s....mostly.A-3 & A-4 models.I just got a ARMALITE m-15a4 model,,its great man....the best, because Armilite created the first models,,the best only get better...ARMALITE also makes for other governments.they are all good,,but the best is ARMALITE,,,not colt,,,,and the best rifle for the desert sands of Iraq are in the ak-47 family,,not AR-15 family.in the sand of Iraq I think my ARMILITE would save me well, but government spec colt will do just as well.BUT THE CHEAP AK-47,full auto, not just burst,,will shoot in the sand,,,from the sand,,,its cheap and reliable,,more reliable than any AR-15.,but,its not as acurate.

AR15 which was developed from the AR10 is the design designation given to the weapon by the Fairchild - Armarlite Corporation. All M16 series rifles, regardless of the manufacturer or its caliber (5.56mm or 6.8mm) are members of the AR15 family of weapons.

AR10 is the original design concept in 7.62 x 51mm NATO which was just adopted as the standard Army sniper rifle SR25 some fifty years after it was rejected in the 1957 rifle trials. The AR15 was the scaled down version of the AR10 in 5.56 x45mm a.k.a. .223 Remington.

Armalite sold the rights to the AR10 and AR15 to Colt in 1959. Colt lost the military contact to make M16A2 in the 1990's to FN (Fabrique Nationale) which built a plant in New Jersey to service its American market.

If you check the "Shotgun News" you'll see that everybody and his brother is making AR15 clones these days. There are made in caliber .223, M43 7.62 x39mm, .30-06, .500 pistol and .50 BMG. They make out of carbon fiber and get this, they even make left handed (ejection port on the left) version. You can even buy kits and build one yourself in you have the skills and tools available.

So who makes the best AR15 (M16A2 or M4) for use in Iraq?? That's whoever made the one you were issued! Take good care of it because it is the very best friend you have in the whole wide world!

The military has several contracts mainly with Colt, who supply the military with M-16/M-4 Rifles. AR-15's are the civilian version of the M-16. Both of which are useless if they get dirty. The AK-47's work great in the sandy environment because the weapon's moving parts tolerances are sloppier than that of the M-16/M-4/AR series weapons. However accuracy is a different issue. The AK-47's aren't as accurate due to the short barrels.

Nobody; the AR-15 is the civilian counterpart (semi only) version of the M16 family of rifles and carbines.

The standard carbine for the military is the M4, which is made solely by the Colt Firearms Division of Colt Industries; the 20 inch M16 series, which is used by some elements of the military is made by a myriad of other companies, including Colt, Fabrique Nationale Herstal and Colt Canada (Diemaco).

The M4 is better suited for CQB combat, in which engagement ranges are between 50-200 meters, for longer rangers, the M16A4 is better suited while some even use the older M14 rifle, made by four major companies; Springfield Armory, Harrington & Richardson, TRW and Olin-Mathieson.(this is back in the 50s, when the M14 was the mainstay rifle of the US military)

You can actually get a drop-in sear conversion for an AR-15 to turn it fully auto. Colt makes a nice AR-15 model.

And for the Marine above me: the AR-15 models available on the civilian market are of better quality then the ones issued to the military. Including the A3s. And plenty of military people use them as well.

Just to clarify - the AR-15 is not a prototype or a predecessor or anything else to an M-16. It is simply an M-16 that isn't fully auto (nor burst mode) that can be sold to civilians. Development of the AR-15 coincides with the M-16 if that makes sense? One of the differences though is that most AR-15 models aren't mass produced for military issue and are usually of better quality with a wider range of ammunition choices.

Colt still makes the M-16. There are several companies who make civilian versions of the AR-15 in several calibers to include the .223 (5.56mm) and .308. Colt, Armlite and Bushmaster are but a few. For the .223 I like Colt. For the .308, Armlite is pretty good.

AR-15 was the prototype for the M-16. Nobody makes the AR-15 today.
