First off, I don't even use IE6 that often. I do use FireFox. So don't suggest that por favor.

Anyway, I went to a forum today that uses BBCode and someone had posted inline images... But they weren't loading. Instead, it was just the white box with a red X (not even a placeholder for the image). The person's signature was similar, but other signatures were screwed up.

Then another forum, one which uses pretty much just basic HTML, had the same problem (they have images enabled there).

The files on each site were different types (jpeg and png), so I don't think it's remotely one filetype... I think the browser's having trouble reading the HTML, but I don't know how to fix that.

are they pngs? Im not sure how well ie works with those (especially w/ transparency)
nevermind, i wasn't reading very well. also ie might be having problems with css, it's supposed to be bad with that. or you could use the copout excuse: you have malware. the best part is that it is probably true, even if it's not causing the problem.
or it could be something wrong on the server side.
