It's all about economics. People what their property to be at a fairly high value so that when they sell they'll command a good price. People who buy into a certain neighborhood probably share the sames values/perceptions of what a "good" neighborhood should look like, which includes lawn care. The one unkempt lawn tends to stand out and depreciate the overall appearance.

Its bad for the people who spent their time cutting their grass and taking care of their homes on the outside. Leaving grass unmowed is also a good way to attract snakes and rats. Plus it just looks ugly and sloppy. If you can afford a pay rent/mortgage for a house that has a lawn, you can afford a lawn mower and cut the grass every weekend.

Because it is a reflection on the entire neighborhood.
If your neighbors are taking pride in the appearance of their homes, it is insulting to them to have some slob living on their street.

That's one reason why people choose to live in gated communities that have a Homeowner's Association. It is so everyone in the community has to conform to the standards of outside appearance.

Why is it socially appropriate to be so lazy as to not conform and not cooperate with the majority of society?

Why should your neighbors have to look at your unkempt yard. If you don't like yardwork, go live in an apartment.
Wherever you go, you will still have to respect your neighbors. Quit being so selfish and lazy.

Well, Darlin, where I live, it means that the 3 little widow women living in three different houses across the street will have lawns that look better than mine! In addition, there are some vaccant lots around, so that we get snakes (!!!!), mice/rats (!!!!), etc. I don't want either one in my yard, but if they are there---I want to be able to SEE them!!

It makes the whole street that you live on look bad. If everybody else's lawn is mowed, and yours is not, it just doesn't look good. Plus, all kinds of insects and rodents can hide in high grass.

I think it's great. Tell them what I do, I'm conserving energy by not using the lawn mower. Or put up a little sign that says, "NATIVE PLANT RESTORATION, DO NOT DISTURB."
