The antidepressants should help keep you on a more even keel, so to speak, it should help with your concentration and help reduce your anxiety - there are several available - be sure to discuss in detail what you are going through when you see the doctor. Good luck to you!

Antidepressants will help you feel better and hopefully cope better and function better. But they won't make your family problems go away, unless they've gotten worse because of your depression and irritability, etc. Sometimes family members can feel very threatened by depression and want nothing more than to stay away from the depressed person.
But it sounds very much that your depression may very well have been caused or exacerbated by difficult family relationships, family dysfunction, etc. I have problems like that myself--terrible family problems, for me anyway, that disturb me and very much interfere with my functioning. At the same time, I know I should stay away because it's toxic for me to stay connected to my siblings. But at the same time I feel a great deal of emotional pain because it means I don't see my nieces and nephew and great nieces. Lately, my sister that has the children hasn't been inviting me to gatherings. I know I should stay away. It's an abusive situation. But at the same time, I feel very hurt at not being invited. It's one thing to decline an invitation. Not being invited is another. All the same, it's a destructive situation for me. I've gotten a lot of support from Yahoo Answers responders, especially one dear contributor that I've been corresponding with frequently in the past few months. I also have a supportive therapist.

Anyway, antidepressants can be good when you need them. Sometimes you have to experiment with your doctor to find the right one for you. They can actually help save your life if you're dipping into a serious, life threatening, depression.

Be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help. We all need help sometimes.

You won't forget your problems. What an antidepressant will do is keep the same thought from repeating in your head over and over. That way you can hopefully have a new thought, like how to solve the problems that have you stressed out.
Since your problem solving wasn't effective, you also need therapy to help you think in new ways.

Don't put too much stock into your issues with your family. The reality is that one hundred years from today... it won't matter. Antidepressants will only put you at the mercy of more drama. Make an effort to stop thinking about the issues that bother you by taking up reading, writing (the latter which may help you tremendously to unload baggage), cleaning the house, cooking, dancing...(dancing is very good to distract your mind!) Issues don't affect you unless you allow them to. As a last resort, get involved with a Presbyterian church.

no, it won't help you forget or make you not feel upset about what has happened to you. what it will do is help you to cope with these emotions better. what has happened is that you have a chemical imbalance in your brain, and the
anti-depressants are replacing that imbalance.
good luck, and don't expect to start feeling better for about
1-2 weeks after you start taking them.

One thing I want to add....Like "very bad kitten" said..it helps to write out your feelings. BUT after you do that...be sure to shred it...or tear it up in small pieces. What you write down is between you and yourself and nobody else. There are things that might want to say that might come back and bite you ...or might hurt your family or friends.
