Constipation is caused by not enough fiber in your diet. Try to find 1, 2, or 3 foods that you really like and make them routine in your diet. For example, I have alot of trouble with constipation because I take narcotics for pain control. But I found a cereal that I love - shredded wheat. If I eat the shredded wheat and drink my coffee I have no problems. The shredded wheat is the fiber I need, and the coffee or any warm liquid, helps stimulate peristalsis, the movement of the GI tract to get things going.

So do a bit of research and find what works for you. Websites that might help...

You may be impacted. A physician can break up the impaction, and give you a script for GoLitely. That'll clean you out good.

Docusate will keep your stool soft, but you end up carrying through a lot of stomach acid. You know what you call it when you digest your own rectum? You can't print the answer in a family newspaper - but it means sheer pain.

So start eating right. Fiber, fiber, fiber. Shredded wheat for breakfast EVERY day is a VERY good start.

* Eat more potassium-rich foods. Potassium strengthens the colon walls and restarts peristaltic action that stimulates bowel movements. It removes the layers of mucus and dried faeces present on the colon walls. The best sources of potassium are prunes, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, kale, sesame, seeds, wheat germ, brewers yeast, pineapple and cauliflower.
* Crush flaxseeds and take 1-2 tablespoons of this powder daily with plenty of water. Flaxseeds have excellent laxative properties, and hence are used in herbal products to relieve constipation. Ensure you drink minimum 8 glasses of water daily.

You need to drink alot of water, and eat lots of fruit, particularly fresh figs which are in season at the moment. Plums and peaches are also good. Try not to eat too much stodgy food. All bran for breakfast should help.

Eat fruit - apples, oranges, prunes, peaches, etc. Drink extra water, too. Not coffee or soda - water.
