“The most judicious person in my nation is Ali (a).”
“I am the warner, and the guide after me is Ali (a).”
“Exemption from the Hellfire comes with love for Ali (a).”

“No one is permitted on the Bridge except by the wilayat of Ali (a).”
“No one can give account of me but Ali (a).”
“The most miserable person from the beginning of the world to the end is the murderer of Ali (a).”
“There is a tree in Paradise called Tuba. Its roots are in the house of Ali, and its branch is Ali (a).”

“The most righteous one is Ali (a).”
“The hand of Ali (a) and my hand are equal in justice.”
“Ali (a) is my brother in this life and the Hereafter.” (
“Ali (a) is the best of humanity, and the one who denies it has blasphemed.”
“Ali (a) is the door of servitude, and whoever passes through that door is a true believer.”
“Ali (a) is the Imam of goodness, the fighter against iniquity, the helper of those who come to his aid, and the deserter of those who desert him.”
“Ali (a) is the Imam of the pious, the prince of believers, and the leader of the resplendent.”
“Ali (a) is to me what Haroun was to Musa.”

“The position of Ali (a) amongst the people is like Surat Qul Hu Allahu Ahad in the Qur’an.”
“Ali (a) is the beloved between two friends, myself and Ibrahim.”
“Ali (a) is from me and I am from him, and he is the protector of every true believer after me.”
“Ali (a) is the most beloved of God and His Prophet in all of creation.”
“Love for Ali (a) is a good deed, so don’t ruin it with bad deeds.”

Ok, I will try to answer your question although I am not Muslim! Ali bin abutalib is pronounced Ali bin abitalib, not abutalib. Ali was the greatest man after Muhammad from among those who believed in the teaching and the culture of Islam; Ali was Muhammad's cousin and was also the writer of the Quran. Muhammad according to Islam could not read or write. When, according to Islam, Muhammad spoke of the Quran, Ali was always there to write what Muhammad had spoken. There are, of course, other writers of the Quran besides Ali, but Ali's Quran is considered among the Shi'a to be the only true Quran available. This Quran is bigger than the one the Sunnites have in their hand and can be found only among the Shiites sect.
Now Omar bin Elkhatab is the second heir after Abu bakr, who became the successor after Muhammad immediately after he died. Omar took over the succession after the death of Abu Bakr. Omar was known to be very Just and modest person. During the night, Omar is known to be checking and looking after the needy and the poor and always nourished those who were in need in Islam.
To answer your question, Islam is divided into two sects: Those who believe that Ali should have taken over the succession of Islam, because he was from Muhammad's family. While all those who succeeded after Muhammad were from among his friends. The Shiite are those who followed Ali and have his Quran; the Sunnites are those who followed Abu Bakr, Omar and Othman bin Affan who gathered the Quran during his regime and made it the only authentic and correct Quran available. The Sunnites are those who believe in the Quran that was gathered by Othman who is Omar's successor. Othman burned all the other Qurans that were available in his time and kept the one he gathered. The Quran which we have now within the hand of the Sunnites are the Quran of Othman, while the Quran we have in the hand of Shiites is the Quran of Ali or the Shiites!

Wise men are always popular . that's why I choose the son of Abi Talib . His sermons, letters and sayings (Peak of Eloquence) confirms how great he was . think about an old man who was ruling half of the world n lived in an old small house and you could easily visit him anytime you wished ... a stranger handing the breads he'd cooked with his own hands out to orphans n paupers every night ... think about a ruler playing with those kids who their father had been killed in combat ... It was my opinion and I did not intend to offend anyone here . good luck .
Additional Details :
What "lonelyspirit" just said is absolutely wrong I bet he's quoted from an inauthentic resource . I'm a shiite n I believe in the scripture sunnies believe in ... As far as I know there'd been always one Koran in the history of islam . I really do not intend to offend anyone here but what he said about "Omar" differs from what history says ... I'm astonished how confidently he said all these ... btw the way you spelled his name is also correct buddy .

Hi Jason... I have to say ur view of Imam Ali (a.s.) gives me hope that even though most Muslims don't know how great he was... at least a few Christians know... cz since u're a Christian, u don't have any preferences over which side to pick!
I have to say that 2 good answers have already been given... Priglitus & glamorous B have already said alot about this great man, Imam Ali (a.s.)...
What I want to say is that Imam Ali (a.s.) has been mentioned in the Quran in more than 200 verses... these verses all talk about his good virtues (how great, generous, courageous he was)... needless to say that he only had good virtues...
Now Umar has been mentioned only once... n in that verse... it talks about his anger... n how his face has turned into a dark color bcz of the anger... "When one of them is given news (of a daughter) as they claimed for the Most Gracious, his face is darkened with misery and anger!" (43:17)
Now do I have to mention that Umar buried his own daughter alive?!
Some might say that I wanna cause fitna... but history is there... u just have to take a look at it... and I'm not making these stuff up...
Now... let me tell u about other things that makes Imam Ali (a.s.) so great in Islam...
-The Prophet was raised by Abitalib... n Imam Ali (a.s.) was raised by the Prophet...
-When the Prophet moved to Medina... he said that everyone has to pick a brother... n he himself picked Imam Ali (a.s.) as his brother...
-And as glamorous B has already mentioned... God told the Prophet that if I hadn't created Ali, no one would have been worthy/great enough to marry ur daughter Fatima...
Now do I have to say that Umar had also asked for Lady Fatima's (a.s.) hand as well?
-All the doors of the houses that opened towards the mosque were ordered to be shut... except the door of the Prophet's house AND Imam Ali's (a.s) house... these are two seperate houses... not one :D
Now I'm gonna keep the rest of the reasons for why Imam Ali (a.s.) is so great... bcz I know u're going to ask this question again... n I need to say something new next time :D

Jason, I have no clue to choose one is greater than another, according Islam history, both of them are great person and gave great contribution to Islam.
Ali was a great person, a martyr and he's "Amirul Mukminin" The leader of believer,
Omar was a great person who brought Islam's victory. And he's also a martyr, he was killed when he perform Salat.
Both of them gave contribution to Islam and they were in a teamwork, it shouldn't be compare. When you are in a team all team members are important and significant.
Your question is like you ask your kid, who is greater, dad or mom, can it be compared? not at all
IF yes, Ali was infallible and Omar not,
Ali was gate of knowledge and Omar wasn't,
Ali is mentioned in Quran and Omar Isn't
Omar was sinner and Ali isn't
Omar was a bad person before came to Islam, and Ali was born in Ka'bah, and born Muslim
those things can't make Omar's contribution to Islam, can be historically deniable. please, be objective!
Just curious, why you forgot the other companions, Uthman and Abu Bakr?

Ali bin abitalib (as) is among the infallibles that were chosen by GOD to lead the humanity after the mortal disappearance (death) of his last Prophet (saww), he was a man of honour and fought with the Holy Prophet (saww) in the early battles of Islam, he was a divine person a superb swordsman's and the first man in history to call upon the humanity saluni saluni meaning ask ask ~!!
where as Omar ibn khataab was a pusillanimous and cunning person who snatched the right of Khilafaat from its rightful owner. he was among the persons who used to flee from the battle field.
undoubtedly there is no comparison in btw these 2 epic extremes. Ali (as) is the 1st Imam of Shia sect of Islam, his virtues lead to the doubt of he being GOD (infact people of north Iran and Iraq of this belief).

Muslims answerers above (other than Marhamah) mainly says Ali is greater because they belong to Shia sect, who believe Ali was the real successor of the Prophet. For Sunni, they are both equal, both are Prophet's companions and Righly Guided Caliphs. They are just, fair and couragous in spreading Islam.
They are both just like lonelyspirit said, but there is no such thing like Quran of Uthman or Quran of Ali. Both Sunni and Shia use one single Quran.
Well, I'm expecting thumb downs here.

Both of them are equally great and inspirational men. We aren't to raise the status of one prophet over another, so why should we do so with the companions?
