The breeders had 2 more litters in that time frame, (from the same parents) my puppy is perfect and I want a companion for her, because I'm so happy with her I would like to use the same breeder, but I'm concerned that 4 litters in 2years is harmful to the mother dog (she is 3or 4yrs old)..

The female must be at least two years old. She may be bred the first heat after her second birthday, and may be bred again after skipping at least 2 seasons. A female should only be bred twice in her lifetime, then spayed The breeder you describe is breeding her dogs to DEATH. She's a detestable puppymiller. Please don't support her.
You can get a referal for either a responsible breeder or a rescue group from the breed's parent club.

Please remember that AKC registration ALONE is not a guarantee of quality.

Here are some suggested questions one can use to determine if a breeder is truly responsible:

1. Is she an AKC registered breeder of good standing and an active member of her breed Parent Club?

2. Are there AKC Champions listed on the pedigree, showing that the breeder spends her time & money to prove the quality of her breeding stock through competition?

3. Are all the animals kept in clean, comfortable, healthy, loving circumstances?

4. Did the breeder conduct extensive interviews with you and every member of your family?

5. Have the sire & dam received all available health clearances, (eg. OFA Hip & Eye, Thyroid testing, THESE VARY FOR EACH BREED)

6. Is she willing to honestly discuss any possible genetic defects that may exist in her line?

7. Does she have a Sales Contract?

8. Does the contract contain a clause stipulating that you spay or neuter the puppy before it reaches a certain
age?

9. Does the contract contain a clause stating that if at any time in the puppy's life, you can no longer care for it, it must be returned to the breeder? (This ensures that no animal bred by this breeder will ever end up in a shelter).

10. Will the breeder maintain contact with you for the life of the puppy to answer questions and help in general?

No a dog shouldn't have more than 1 litter a year
Your dog may have come from an AKC breeder but apparently she's out for the moneya nd a puppymill breeding like that.
She is out to kill her dogs breeding like that she apparently just wants a breeding machine.
This is why I'm personally against AKC they are also the ones who register all the petshop puppies in my area and these petshops buy from puppy mills

dams should never have more than 1 litter a year and very good breeders will only breed them every other year up to 3-4 litters at the very most. you really should find a companion from another breeder or even better-adopt!

Obviously the breeder is only after money he/she gets from selling the pups and in my opinion is running a puppy mill even if she/he is only breeding one dog...It is very bad for a mama dog to have more then 1 litter a year it would be like a human mother getting pregnant right after giving birth The mama dog has to have a chance to build her body back up

Four litters in two years is not at all good for the mother. One litter a year is more than plenty. Mom needs time to recoup and become healthy and fit again. I would pass on another pup from this breeder. This is not ethical breeding, it is puppy mill breeding.

YOU ROCK BASSETNUT!!!

Lottie- find another breeder. There are some folks who give good advice here and the Basset is one. If you aren't happy with breeder selection, try adopting from breed rescue or try Petfinder:

Now that you have discovered that your beloved pet isn't from a quality breeder and probably isn't a champion, preserve her health and your happiness and get her spayed, if she hasn't been done yet. Thank you.

That is unethical for any breeder to do. I have never bred any of my dogs that much in most of their life times. It is over breeding at it's finest or worst.
This person is not one who cares about her dogs at all but just for the money she can make off them.

Find another breeder and then you will very happy you did!.

Absolutely it is harmful.

NO good breeder would ever breed a girl 4 times in a row!

Generally it's not recommended that they have more than 3 litters in a lifetime. None of my girls has ever had more than 2, and most have had only one.

This woman obviously cares nothing for her dogs. Please get your next one from someone else.

any one dog should have 1 litter a year and no more even if it was a jack russell or a great dane it doesn't matter, they shouldn't even have one every time they come into season personnally i think that any dog should only ever have 3 litters in there life time.

No dog should EVER have more than 1 litter per year. More than that is irresponsible and in my opinion cruelty.
I think dogs should not be bred more than a few times in their lifetime and certainly not every heat cycle.
Do not support this breeder.
Good for you for showing the intelligence to be concerned.
