He isn't eating a lot of sand - because I make him quit ; but he gets a taste or two in before I get him to stop .

Usually when dogs are eating something that they shouldn't be it's because they're lacking some nutrional value. I know for sure that's why dogs might eat another dogs poo. Your dog could just be eating sand because dogs like to put anything they can fit in their mouths, in their mouths. They don't have hands, so to find out what things are, they put it in their mouths.

If it keeps eating sand on a regular basis, I'd ask your vet. Or if he's eating huge amounts of sand that might hurt him. But it's probably pretty normal.

My best bet is that the sand has cat poop in it, and yes, some dogs eat cat food. The guy next door said the cure for that was to feed the dog cat food one time. After that, he said the dog will never eat cat food again.

Good luck!

My puppy used to eat sand all the time when i'd take her to the beach. She would be so sick afterwards we had to stop taking her. I think it has to do w/ the salty taste of it. The only way we got her to stop was to bring LOTS of fresh water for her to drink while we were at the beach.
