I have two dogs and I have been reading about anal glands and that you need to check them every so often. I had been taking them to a groomer but stopped because I witness the groomer hit my dog because she was whinning. How exactly do I go about checking them and how do I know when they need to be worked with? Is this something I can do or do I need to take them to a vet to get them checked out? I have never done it before so as much detail as you can (or are willing) to give I would appreciate it.

So, how do I know if they are impacted? Is it when they drag their butts on the floor? One of my dogs has been doing this every so often but as soon as I catch her she stops. She is a Jack Russell if that tells you anything. is she just trying to get my attention or does she need to get her butt looked at?

can anything bad happen if you don't express their glands? The same groomer who hit my dog said that dogs can get impacted anal glands and they can burst. Is this true or do I believe the dog hitter.

First let me say that I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a groomer.
I would suggest you take the dogs to the vets and have them checked. It is something tht should be done as par of a yearly check up with the yearly shots.
Yes dogs anal glands can get impacted and burst this is very painful and the infection can spread.
My sisters chihuahua just had an infeccted anal gland and 2 vets have told her it would be best to have the anal glands removed as teh infections can keep popping up.
All the anal gland is is the scent gland so they are not realy needed.
I hope this will help.

Not all dogs have this problem and they only need to be checked if the dog has a problem with impacted anal glands. Most don't.
A vet or a different groomer can show you how and good for you for getting away from that groomer.

The animals must have their anal glands expressed. This mainly serves to cut down on doggy odor. Outside dogs don't need it and again it is for you and not them. Groomers should do it but you can do it your self. Just don't get it on you.

eww, i don't do it. i take my dog to the vet/groomer and they do it. i have a mini schnauzer and they have to have it done every once in a while. my vet just does it without me asking and so does the groomer. if you aren't experienced with it, let the vet do it. most vets, at least mine does, will to anal glands/nail clipping for like $8.00 together. call your vet and check the hours. mine only does it on m-w-f between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. so, i would check. it is just easier on the dog and you to let a professional take care of that.

Yes, your dogs anal glands can rupture if they are not expressed regularly. Scooting is a sign that your dogs anal glands need to be expressed. All veterinarians will do this job for you (it's not pleasant). If you would rather do it yourself, here is a good website that explains the process and includes information on why, exactly, you're doing it.

I have my dogs anal glands expressed every time I take them to the groomer. Take yours to a different groomer. They should not be hitting your dog. Check out my web page about anal glands, it might help.

The anal glands or sacs are on either side of the anus and are regularly released when your dog defecates. However sometimes these sacs can get infected or clog. You will know when they do because you dog will scoot around on it's rear end to try and empty them that way. Some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. If the scooting continues you can either empty them yourself or take them to a vet and they can do it. It is rather nasty and extremely fowl smelling.

If your dogs are not bothered by their "behinds", just leave them alone.
If a "groomer" hit your dog....you should have kicked him into groin!!! Nobody ever, should hit your dog! Period!
