A muslim can fast everyday of the year except the days of Eid ul FItr and Eid Ul Adha...It is not necessary to fast on the day before or after the friday...It is Sunnah(a way of the prophet(p.b.u.h)to fast on a Monday and Thursday

Psycho is right.. unless you fast an alternative day which is Friday "You didn't fast a day in Ramadan, and you're compensating it on a Friday" or you Fast it as a compensation for an oath.

Physco is indeed correct. Just one correction to another answer, its MONDAY and thursday for sunnah fasting Not Tuesday and thursday. It is also very good to fast the white days of the Islamic month. Go to islamonline.net for even further info. Peace

if fasting on friday they should fast the day befor or day after .unless it is part of a fasting pattern like fasting every other day

NO, fasting on Friday is Makrouh..
if you are to, then you'll have to fast a day before, a day after, or both...
that is, you can fast Thursday and Friday, Friday and Saturday, or all the three, but fasting on Friday alone is MAKROUH..
