Having 3 heart attacks and all of them being caused from anxiety and emotional upset you have to get yourself focused and relaxed. I have been in counseling for almost 2 years and have been told that when you feel the anxiety coming on you need to focus on someone or something to distract your mind from you feelings. I listen to calming music and take deep breaths and exhale slowly or sometimes I get my mind occupied on something else such as a computer game, washing dishes or talking to my pets. If you are at a place other than home, concentrate on your surroundings. A tree, a bird, a picture on the wall or take a brisk walk. You just have to get your mind off the anxiety quickly. Take a mind "road trip" and see yourself on the beach or one of your favorite places. But always remember "You are only responsible for your own actions and you can only hope to change the actions of others. Good luck and good health!

I suggest checking out the Relaxation Response. I learned about it in Peer Support training, and have found it to be easy to incorporate during an anxiety attack and absolutely wonderful in reducing your stress.

Progressive exposure to the thing you most fear. In other words, deliberately expose yourself to the thing that causes your anxiety, but in small doses. Once you see that you're not going to die, faint or explode, try it again, but in a bigger dose. Eventually, you'll be able to do whatever it is, without anxiety. It takes time and deliberation, but it can be conquered. I used to "suffocate" in crowds, but progressive exposure has eliminated much of the claustrophobia.
