I agree with Mintgirl79. he is able to travel outside of the u.s. with a mexican passport as long as he has his greencard at all times while travelling. he can go to the nearest Mexican consulate in the U.S. (just google "Mexican Consulate in city, state") and get a passport there or an extension to the passport.

once he becomes a u.s. citizen, the ceremonial place will take his mexican passport and give him an application form for a u.s. passport. then he will take the form to the nearest u.s. postal building where the passport will get processed. goodluck!

A passport for which country?

If he wants a Mexican passport then yes contact the Mexican Embassy.

If he's a legal resident in the USA and wants a US passport he'll have to be a citizen of the USA. If he is not then this is first step he has to take.

If he's a citizen then just go on line and get the application for the US passport and send it in.

Is he a legal resident of the USA? Then he can get a Mexican passport from the Mexican embassy.

If he is in the USA as an illegal alien resident, he needs to return to Mexico and apply for a Mexican passport. Then he can apply to immigrate to the USA legally.

Either way, since he is a citizen of Mexico, he cannot get a US passport, he has to get a Mexican passport.

He has to keep a mexican passport and a US green card. You can get one pretty much anywhere in mexico, and it only takes a few hours. He can only get a US passport if and when he becomes a US citizen.
