i always thought don't let it touch the ground or anything, and bring it in when it rains and at night unless you have a light on it.

Although I am not American...I believe this question could be posed to anyone from any country...Since a flag is a flag...It should not matter which country...We used to have a Canadian Flag flying in our front yard, and we would lower it when a member of our Canadian Forces was killed in Afghanistan, and we would leave it lowered until the body returned back to Canada and we would only raise the flag back to full mast once the body has been buried...
We would take our flag down when a big storm was coming. We would not let our flag touch the ground, since that is usually common sense with any flag of your country.
Good Question :) Thanks for posting it

Make sure it is clean and untattered. It is clearly visible. Don't let it touch the ground, trees, house etc. If it rains bring it in. If it's dark bring it in or shine a light on it.

None, it's your flag. Do whatever you want with it.
I'd treat it with respect but that's just me. Treating it with respect means that I have to stand for your right to do whatever you want to do with your flag.
