I recently got a used car, and I'm confused about how to get the license plate for it. The papers that we received when we bought the car say that once you get some information (sorry, I can't remember what kind...) in the mail, it is your responsibility to pick up the plate yourself. However, I was reading some other questions on here, and they say that you wait to get the plate in the mail. If I do have to pick it up myself, where do I go? I live in Georgia, if that makes a difference. The temporary tag expires on the 29th, so I'm kind of in a rush to get this figured out.

I bought it from a dealership.

Did you buy from a private sale or from a dealer? If it was the dealer and your temp. plate expires then go back to them and request another temp plate. Also you can check with them about the registration on the car. Just to be sure it was filed. I know a lot of the time, the plates will come in the mail just before the temp. expires.

If you bought from a private sale, then the paper work should have been done at the county clerks office or the DMV, whichever site handles the licensing in your State. Then all the paperwork is done and they would give you a plate while you are there. So you can call the office and make an inquiry about the plate, and see what they say.

good luck, and congratulations on the new used car.

Since you have a temporary plate good for 30 days, it has to be from a dealer since the general public can't do temporary plates, so the best source of information will be the dealer you bought it from. Did you get some papers in the mail? If not find out why not. If you did, take them in and get the plates.

You should call your DMV and see if they are mailing it, if not go there and get it yourself.
