I don`t know what is my name.
May be I am nameless.
But they call my horse by name: "Magnolia Flora"

The imagery came from Dewey's childhood: "I had spent a good deal of time poking around in the high desert with my brother when we lived at Vandenberg Air Force Base [in California]. And we'd drive through Arizona and New Mexico. I loved the cactus and the heat. I was trying to capture the sights and sounds of the desert, and there was an environmental message at the end. But it's grown to mean more for me. I see now that this anonymous horse was a vehicle to get me away from all the confusion and chaos of life to a peaceful, quiet place."

Pretty straightforward imagery. A dessert is barren. A nameless horse doesn't require the rider to have any kind of meaningful, personal connection with it.

Basically it's a metaphor for a person who lives a random and mostly empty existence, caring about nothing.

By that's just my two cents... your mileage may vary.

I have always rather supposed that it is a horse with no name that is ridden through the desert.

John Wayne is the name to be remembered. If he is not in the movie it just isn't worth going to.

Here's the lyrics: http://music.yahoo.com/America/A-Horse-With-No-Name/lyrics/437073#lyricstop

It sounds like his horse is Disillusionment, carrying him away from humanity into a lonely world. Love was what he needed, but he'd lost faith in ever finding it.

Maybe the "rain," that he was so glad to be out of, was harshness, criticism, etc, coming down on his head.

At least, when alone, away from the voices of judgment, he could feel connected with that part of himself that recognises his own infinite worth (his "name").

But he still missed the love... (looking longingly at the dead river).

He gave up his "horse"... then the desert turned into ocean. Love, the essence of life, returns in even greater measure, when you take faith back into your heart, by conscious choice.

The horse with no name is "Mescalito" as they are wandering in the desert on a hunt for peyote, the sacred plant teacher.
