No. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

Not really. I had a friend who believed this, but I think it is a very haphazard way of getting answers from the Lord.

I do believe Lord can guide me, and maybe even influence where the book opens, but I tend to think there would be more Divine guidance in an answer when I had searched it out in my heart. For instance, let the Bible (or other scripture) fall open, read a bit, have some thoughts, look at the cross-references and follow a kind of "scripture chain" until you've come to a deeper understanding.

Pondering is important, but so is the kind of meditation where you calm your mind from thinking, and allow answers to flow in.

I think that taking a scripture, fallen from the Bible at random, is an unreliable and perhaps lazy way of seeking for answers, and is akin to "sign seeking". Exercise of heart and mind, and listening to inspiration, visions and dreams, I think, is a surer way of getting answers from God.

God can communicate however he chooses to with you. I used to do that a lot and one time I believe God clearly pointed out a verse to me. But you are in a sense putting God to the test. You're also in a way trying to force od to reveal something to you.
When readin the Bible I think its smart to have 2 or 3 bookmarks in different spots. Maybe 1 in the Old testament, 1 in the new and I also like to have 1 in the Psalms. Just read sarting from wherever you last left off in one of those spots. Ask before hand that God will reveal things to you through His word, but know that' he's not always going to. That doesn't mean you won't stilll benefit as an intellectual christain, it just wont always be enlightening verses jumping out at you so that you know it's God speaking directly to you. Allow God to be God when waiting on Him to speak.
