It's named after Narcissus, in Greek Mythology. He loved himself so much he sat and looked at his reflection in the water. The gods turned him into a flower, and there is a flower called Narcissus that faces downwards as if it could be looking at it's reflection.
In mental health, Narcissism, or Narcissistic Personality is sometimes called "malignant self love." Where somebody is convinced that he or she is very important, entitled to special privileges, expects excessive admiration from others and is surprised or angry when the expected admiration is not given. Somebody might have Narcissistic traits without having full blown Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Narcissism describes the character trait of self love.
The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.
Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth and was the first to use the term in the reference to psychology. [see source 1]
Andrew Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others [see source 2].
In psychology and psychiatry, excessive narcissism is recognized as a severe personality dysfunction or personality disorder, most characteristically Narcissistic Personality Disorder, also referred to as NPD.
The terms "narcissism", "narcissistic" and "narcissist" are often used as pejoratives, denoting vanity, conceit, egotism or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. Arguably, however, these terms are used to draw parallels between allegations of self-centeredness and Narcissistic personality disorder, rather than than toward healthy self-love.

Being in love with yourself. Vanity, ego, self-absorption, etc.
See the link below. The term comes from Greek/Roman mythology. It's a pretty cool story.

I believe being narcissistic is when you place your wants and needs above everyone else's and find yourself with the most positive attributes. Think of Scarlett O'hara from Gone With The Wind, or one of those partying celebrities always in the papers.

It means you are in love with yourself. It comes from Greek mythology where Naricis (sp) was always looking in the water to see himself because he was so beautiful. Most people like themselves, but when it becomes their main interest then it is a problem.
