I know in Vegas bartenders/servers get paid 7-10 an hour plus tips. The wages are so low (2-3$) because they get tips that they don't get taxed on. So raise there pay to $8 bucks like the average jo.

I agree with you entirely Lauren. Employers are responsible for wages, not patrons or consumers. And all these bimbo waitresses are overworked because the selfish employer purposely understaffs shifts. So the helpless patron receives shoddy service with 1 [one], as she breezes by,"is everything alririte ?" or "how ya doin" ? She doesn't care if you answer & you most likely have food in your mouth anyhow. Sorry, it's a terrible system however I will maintain my position. "THEY" need to change the process.

In many cases, the tip is considered to be part of the person's pay. Waiters and waitresses, for example, are often paid less than minimum wage with the expectation that part of their pay will come from tips. Also, the idea behind the tip is to motivate the person to give better service.

Personally I don't think we should HAVE to tip. Yes some people depend on tips but if they aren't willing to give good service then they don't deserve to be tipped. I am paying enough for the service. (Or meal) and I also have to support a family. I live in Ontario and our minimum wage is higher than mentioned here. (even for servers/bar staff)
If I receive good service than I tip accordingly. If I receive poor service I also tip accordingly. If I am given service that is horrible I will not tip and I will make sure the person is aware of the reason. (this has rearly happened but it has...and not for reasons beyond the control of the waitress)
I do not receive tips for doing my job. I also work with the public and could certainly use some extra cash. Who couldn't?

I am so sick of this question. Look, if you want to be a cheap *** and not tip, don't. Plain and simple. Tips are an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service." These people are providing a service to you, and not every server, hairstylists, tattoo artist etc are created equal. If servers didn't get tipped, I guarantee you they'd take your order, drop by once to drop off food and check, and that's it. Basically the service you get a Mickey D's. You tip people to get top notch service. And it's not easy, get a job in a restuarant, you probably wouldn't last a week.

Um, Waitresses and bartenders get paid assuming they will get tips. The department of labor has it set up this way.
If you were working for $2.13 per hour and had a family at home to support, I'm sure you would appreciate a couple extra bucks.
Tattoo artists usually work on commission.

specific jobs- like baristas- are to not be tipped for familiar provider even at Starbucks. in the event that they have been to ever point out a tip to you they could be heavily reprimanded. I tip my interior of sight Starbucks barista on a customary foundation because of the fact I see the extra suitable attempt they placed into making my complicated drink- and whilst Im in a real rush they have been usual to bypass me forward in the drink line. At different places on each and every occasion I see undesirable provider i don't tip and that i could additionally chortle on the thought of Burger King putting out a tip jar. Waitstaff additionally is going previous a customary provider many of the time. All they're predicted to do is take my order and produce me my nutrition. yet I ask for further issues and that they convey it to me without delay with a grin. I tip 20% (that's the hot known). as quickly as I cant cope with to pay for the tip I stay residing house. yet as quickly as I run throughout a unfavourable waiter or waitress I enable the administrative be responsive to fairly than leaving a unfavourable tip and not speaking up. A unfavourable tip merely communicates which you're low-priced fairly than you have been upset with the provider. As for different countries not waiting for a tip- unfavourable to mediocre provider many of the time. u.s. has great client help for a reason. If its not great we are in a position to *****. Waitstaff could desire to on no account persist with you to reprimand you for a foul tip or make a foul remark. undesirable tippers don't be taught that way and its undesirable company.

Alright... let's clear up a few things...
Here in the USA, the IRS DOES Tax tops... at least they ATTEMPT to do so. Waitstaff are supposed to report their tips on their time-cards every day. There are 2 reasons for this:
1- the IRS will tax it as income.
2- it is figured into the wages paid to the waitstaff.
Waitstaff DOES receive MINIMUM WAGE. The system works like this:
Waitress gets a BASE wage of $3.00/hour. She works the lunch shift for 3 hours. She collects $15.00 in tips for her shift, and reports it on her time card.
For sake of example, the minimum wage is $7.00/hr. For the 3 hours she worked, that means the minimum wage pay is $21.00.
However, the waitress earned $3.00/hr for 3 hrs = $9.00... PLUS $15.00 in tips... therefore she earned a total of $24.00 for the 3 hours work. This is then ABOVE the "minimum wage pay," so she has earned at least minimum wage for her shift.
IF she had collected only $10.00 in tips, then her earnings would have been $9.00 plus $10.00 = $19.00... BELOW the minimum wage pay. In this case, the restaurant will have to "kick in" the additional $2.00 to come up to the $21.00 minimum wage pay.
So you see... she DOES earn at LEAST minimum wage regardless of the tips she collects. AND she has to report the tips, because they are considered taxable income.
Maybe some day the practice of tipping will fade away, but I think it's too engrained in our culture to do away with it easily.
Have a great day!

i agree to a point. the whole point of tips is To Insure Proper Service. That's what tips means. waitstaff, bartenders, hairdressers, etc, those are the people who deserve tips, they are the ones that get paid less than minimum wage. what i don't agree on is people tipping when they go into a coffee shop (DND) and places like that. THEY make well over minimum wage and the service in some of those places is horrible.

Many waiters and waitresses get minimum wage or less and their livelihood depends largely on tips. Don't want to tip for good service then satart lobbying for these people to get decent wages.

I agree. I'd rather pay more for my bill than be expected to tip. Not only all that, but people expect tips even for crappy work! You gotta earn it. I don't care if you only make $3/hr.
Sorry, no hand outs for just doing your job.
