I've been seeing this white, circular flash every time I blink in a dark room. It isn't like little flashing lights everwhere,it's just one flash. It's also sort of big. I was fine 2 weeks ago, though. I don't have migraines or anything like that,so that's not the problem. Do you think I should see an eye doctor?? Thanks

It sounds like the vitreous gel inside your eye has detached off the back. This is normal if you live long enough. If it sloshes around enough and detaches off the back all the way to the front where it's attached firmly, it can tug on the retina. This tugging can't be felt. There's no pain or sensation fibers in the retina. But there are light sensations. As you tug on the retina it produces these light flashes. If you tug hard enough, you can tear the retina. This would usually be accompanied by lots of new floaters or spots. Some people say lots of dots, lots of spots, hundreds of dots, spider webs, cob webs, smoke, haze...those are the words. If you have those symptoms as well, you probably have a retinal tear which bled.
Those little RBC's are the little new floaters, or pigment cells are the new floaters.

You should be seen by a retina specialist to determine whether or not you have a tear or worse.

You should see an eye doctor ASAP. You may be experiencing a retinal tear. The most common symptom is a flash when blinking! This can be repaired if caught early enough. However, if it is not diagnosed and treated in time, you may suffer permanent vision loss.

original poster: you need a dilated eye exam ASAP. what you are describing is a possible sign of retinal hole/tear/detachment. possible permanent vision loss. you need an eye exam TODAY.

peach: no. astigmatism DOES NOT cause flashes.

Yes I think you should get a professional opinion on this. It sounds serious.

You may need a brain scan.
