It's was only for Catholics and it's no longer even true. The Church has already removed this "sacrifice" a long time ago. It was a sort of penitince and sacrifice by the rich as giving up meat on Fridays (not just Good Friday) was considred a sacrifice since meat was once very expensive luxury food. Very few people were able to afford it and abstaining was a form of humility, eating like the masses as it were, It is no longer true nowadays. Some people still do it but a lot don't anymore. And we all know that "meat" does include fish. But in the context of how the word "meat" was used, it referrred only to livestock which was part of a family's wealth. Fish caught was "wild" and not part of wealth. Peasants ate fish if at all, aristocrats ate "meat",

I just had meatloaf tonight. My sides were a baked potato, tomato salad with fresh basil and chives and Marzetti slaw dressing, and sauteed mushrooms (in a little red wine and butter). I enjoyed my dinner very much.
But a lot of times, it's meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. Don't forget the beef gravy for on the mashed potatoes!

Mashed potatoes & gravy. Tossed salad or green beans or broccoli. Tater tots & corn were the sides served at my school. Buttered noodles are also good. Keep the sides simple. Enjoy.

Salad is a healthy option or steamed vegetables. That will be very filling.
Here is a recipe for a great bean salad. You can use canned beans or you can boil your own and you can use any kind you like.
1-beans ( any type you like or a mixture)
2- spring onions
3-tomatoes diced
4- chopeed parsely to taste
5-olive oil
6-salt
7-balsamic vinegar
8- some lemon juice
9- garlic paste if you like.
I did not put measures since I do it to taste.
add all the ingredients and mix. Great healthy bean salad

Definitly mashed potatoes with peas and carots. Peas and carrots together is called bubble and squeek. Then for lunch the next day is a meatloaf sandwhich, cold of course, with lettuce and mayo. Yum!
