"anishinabek " if we are being politically correct and yes eagle feathers are very sacred to us folk.. but if you were presented one then it wouldnt be illegal for you to possess.. It was very unfair of everyone to jump down your throat without knowing all the facts.. dont let your son down let him believe he has a eagle feather you are a good dad...

Although this is an old question, I just wanted to add that if you are a Native American you are permitted to own them...no questions asked.
We, as the original people of this country take great pride in the Eagle and are honored greatly when presented one from a person who is honoring you for your accomplishments, assisting them in their time of need and simply because you admire this person for their own achievements. \
I was recently asked by a law enforcement officer why I was in possession of a number of Eagle Feathers. All I had to do was show him my enrollment card from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Luckily this one officer knew the laws and did not take the questions any further. As natives we are permitted to submit a form to the Government requesting either the entire bird, a wing or a number of feathers. While it might take awhile....I have heard of two months up to a year for your request to be granted.
Sorry white people, this is one of a very few things that we have on you!! You cannot possess even one...or a part of one. Doing so definitely will land you in jail then prison!!

Cleaning Eagle Feathers

Are you a Native American? Do you have the proper permit to even OWN Eagle feathers?

I'm not trying to be snotty - but Eagle feathers and body parts are considered sacred to many Native Americans. Plus, the Federal Government will prosecute you for owning eagle feathers without a permit.

A while back (mid 1990's) a woman was sent to prison for picking up an eagle feather and using it in her artwork - which she had presented to then First Lady Hilary Clinton.

Sorry I can't help you clean your feathers - but make sure you won't get into trouble for even owning them first. I'd hate for you to get jail time.

Use warm water, Dawn and a soft toothbrush.
Soak the feather for a few minutes and slowly and gently brush the feathers along the grain with the toothbrush.
Add a little Dawn dishwashing liquid to the water.
Rinse the feather with the quill up and tip facing down.
Place on a dish towel to dry.
When dry, comb with another dry toothbrush. If you have to, repeat cleaning
Good luck

A good way to clean feathers is to dip them in hot water, this will get rid of any kinks in the shaft. swirl it round in the water to red rid of any muck, but to be honest they will nerev come out the same unless a bird preens them back into possition.

The second poster gave you the correct way to clean them, but the first poster was right. You could pay big fines just for having even ONE!
