I recently got a job in customer service and I'm so nervous each time I go to work. I'm really shy and I'm not really good with interacting with people. I'm scared that I'll mess up and the people will get mad at me. I've been training for 3 days and I still can't get things right and my boss tells me that I'm making a lot of mistakes. I feel like I'm too shy for this job or any other job out there. I really wish I could get over my shyness and just be good at my job...

I remember when I began my first job as a teenager, it was working in a heavily customer service-focused organization. I was pretty shy at the time, but I wanted to do well at the job, so I tried my best to overcome it.

What really helped me was to identify several people around me who I could use as role models. I had no idea how to not be shy, but there were plenty of people around me who were effortlessly outgoing. I watched them carefully and learned what I could.

Depending on your business, there's usually a standard set of banter that you can master to converse with customers. If you're at a supermarket, you may ask about the awesome samples they're handing out that day. If you're renting cars, you'll ask where people are heading, if they're excited about it, et cetera. Learn this banter from your role models and start to try it out yourself. Soon you'll find that you can put your own spin on it and you'll even begin coming up with your own conversation starters.

I strongly believe that shyness can be beaten -- if only because I had some great success at doing so myself. The trick is to just start chipping away. The other thing that may help is to realize you're in a consequence free environment in terms of making conversation or introducing new products. Your customers expect (and in some cases demand) that you will chat them up and tell them about things. Some will be pretty responsive. Some won't. Doesn't matter -- you're just doing your job.

The point is that this will take some work and effort to improve. But it's totally doable, once you start giving it a try. When I started, I could barely have a conversation with a customer. A couple of years later, at a different job doing sales, I could captivate an audience of 12 or more doing product demonstrations without breaking a sweat. Practice. It'll feel weird. You won't master it overnight. But you'll get there.

Any new job is scary and I'm 40 and just started a new job a few months ago. Guess what? I made mistakes my first couple days on the job and it's an industry I've worked in for 21 years!!! If you are in customer service, that is great. It will help boost your self-confidence. Just make sure that you take notes and ask questions. You will be jammin' in no time!

If you have tried your best in doing the job and nothing seems to work out, perhaps you can try other jobs. i believe everyone is capable in their own ways. some in sales, some in admin, some in customer services line.

its only been 3 days its still a short period of time to get used to the work place. so do not despair. if u are detemined enough, you can try to interact more with your co-workers. try to get information from them regarding this job.

be confident in yourself, when people communicate, often the other party might be as nervous as well. think in this way that you are helping them providing services..
give yourself more time...
