Article on Yahoo from yesterday citing www.livescience.com
Excerpt:
The research was designed primarily to compare cats' working memory of their recent movements with their visual memories, and found that cats remember better with their bodies than their eyes when they have encountered an object placed in their path...The cats remembered having stepped over the hurdle for at least 10 minutes, bringing their hind legs up to clear the object, even though it wasn't there.

That's stupid. If a cat only had a 10 minute memory, cats all over the world would poop everywhere in their houses instead of using the litter box. I have a 4 year old cat, and she remembers where her litter box is all the time. I don't have to show her every 10 minutes. The experts are wrong on this one.

Cats can display some pretty miraculous behaviour which says to me their memory span is something more like sustaining... For instance I do not think they happen to be as sensitive as dogs are because their drive is that of more of a survival instinct, the consciousness is vast but their recall or depth of understanding may not be as considerable. Just a guess.

I've had cats that hid their toys, didn't play with them for a while, and went right back to where they were hidden months later. Or they would learn a game, not play for a while, and know exactly what to do when we'd play it again. They also seem to remember people they were comfortable with but haven't seen in a long time.

the article in reference was designed to test only certain types of memory. in their studies they found it true that the memory used to affect the way they lift there legs to walk over obstacles only last ten minutes. this doesnt say that all of their memory only last ten minutes. there are things they remember forever and things such as when to pick up their back legs to step over something that is not needed in their lond term memory.

That's not true at all. Cats remember certain things for there whole life. Like people, other cats and animals, and places.
