... assuming, of course, the existence of God... and atheists. :D

I think it's fairly obvious that He wouldn't be choosing the very group who denies Him. Some things are too absurd to even be entertaining.

Here's a very interesting essay to that effect -- it basically concludes that atheists are the only ones who:

1.) Care enough about doing what's right to actively examine their own and others' beliefs,

2.) Have the courage to stand up for what's right, rather than kowtowing to the whims of the obviously amoral biblegod.

Thus, choosing atheists is the best chance God has for populating heaven with truly GOOD and MORAL individuals...

Philosopher Galen Strawson once proposed that it was the atheists and agnostics that God must love the most: "For they are the ones who have taken him most seriously." Strawson saw blind belief in God as an inherent insult to God himself. A God which gave us reason would want us to use it, wouldn't he? Wouldn't he rather you honestly disbelieve, or do you think he would rather you dishonestly and emotionally pursue him endlessly without any means, reason, or foundation?

In my own personal search for "God", I have found nothing but superstition and inventions of man.

Sure, the idea of a heaven sounds wonderful, but it is wishful thinking only.

We would, ironically, appear to be the ones who take Him the most seriously. I would still question what purpose we would have been chosen for, exactly. I have no interest in being better than someone else, let alone being chosen for any specific purpose other than those I embark on by my own choice.

No.

But what would be funny is if Atheism was declared a religion. Then all of the rest of us 'religious' people could claim discrimination. It sure seems like the atheists get the nod of approval from the govnt and law.

They'd loose everything they worked for if they became a religion. Funny how that works isn't it? It all comes down to definition and who has the power to define.

I could get along with a god like that. Provided the Hell stuff was just a story. And worshipping not required.

Looking at the answers, It seems like people are forgetting that this is just a question. You don't have to disprove it, that's just ruining the fun of the question. I don't mean to sound like a nag or anything, it's just a bit odd seeing these.

Why would God choose someone who doesn't believe in Him? And I don't think Atheists would want to be chosen.

It would be an indication that God has an ironic sense of humor.

Somebody call Alanis Morissette so that she can learn what "ironic" means.

I suppose it would imply that God likes it when people use their brains, and don't allow themselves to be manipulated.

That would be interesting. God would be speaking to them and they would keep thinking that someone was hidden behind a bush or something.. playing a trick.
