It was corrupt in so many ways I am not able to count them all.
Here are a few:
1. They sold for money 'get of hell cards' called indulgences.
2. They murdered those who tried to translated the Word of God into the language of the common people. Why? Because if the people found out what the Bible really said, they would know how false and fake the church at rome really is.
3. They mixed paganism and Christianity to the point where the church of rome was no longer Christian.
4. They even started teaching the doctrines of demons. See 1 Tim 4:1-4.
People are unhappy with the church of rome today for the same reasons. At least the church of rome is no longer allowed to murder people who disagree with them.
I'm sure if I had lived 500 years ago some Pope would have ordered me to be burned at the stake too.

Rome saw that the Christians were overtaking the whole world, so they got together with heretics ( those fallen away from the truth ), and CREATED the Roman Catholic church so they could still have control on secular minded people. Thus, all the EVIL displayed from that time period is from SATAN !!!
Now, there is a lot of news , of unveiling the perversions , and so they have to be more cautious, but, there still remains the ROOT, and so, the EVIL will still be there deceiving and entrapping. Evil people will not think unhappy thoughts of the Roman Catholic church, but those that know the Truth are VERY unhappy that so many have been deceived !

The Roman Catholics
made people read the bible only in Latin so that people will not find out that the Roman Catholics were doing wrong
Accepted money to make people buy their way to heaven
Used the money to improve the church rather than give it to the poor
Used money for their own pleasure ans selfishness.
Killed anyone who disagreed with them
Martin Luther was able to write 95 reason on why the Catholics were doing wrong! The protestants believed him over the Catholics who claimed their way was the only way to heaven.

The church was being corrupt, and religious leaders were accepting large sums of money in exchange for forgiveness and salvation. It seemed like people could buy their way in to heaven, which wasn't the original intent of the church. This was very upsetting to most, because many people were very poor during the 16th century.

are the reasons not obvious....take a look at Martin Luther, and his 95 thesis, this may give you some insight.
