The question should actually be, "Why do MOST people believe in God?"
Because the evidence for an intelligent Creator of the universe is too overwhelming to ignore.
Undoubtedly, the atheist will reply that there is no evidence for the existence of God, but what kind evidence are you looking for? Coercive evidence? Evidence that grabs you by your intellectual lapels and forces you to believe it? There is no such type of evidence in any field of study.
Even in law, unless a juror witnessed the crime being committed (in which case he would be a witness and not a juror), he can only take what evidence is presented to him, weigh the facts from all sides, and make the best decision he can. It is still a judgment call.
The evidence for the existence of God is incredibly persuasive, but the spiritually apathetic will not find it. Blaise Pascal said that God gives us just enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don't.

Because some people find it reasonable to think that this universe didn't just "pop" into existence of its own accord. Humanity desires truth, beauty, love, meaning. Humanity has univeral questions: Where did I come from? Where am I going? Why is there evil? What happens when I die? These are questions that religion answers. These are questions that every human being has in their heart and mind. I think the excuse that religion divides people is just that-an excuse and not really reasonable when reflected upon. I am a christian and I don't want to FORCE anyone to believe anything but I am more than willing to engage in rational, meaningful discussions with people about my beliefs.
What actually divides the world is human nature. Selfishness, anger, hatred, ignorance. The fact that humans are capable of atrocities or SINS. This is something that christianity has always affirmed - "Original Sin" I believe relgion, true religion, makes people better. Aboloshing religion is NOT going to change the fact that human nature is what it is.

The reason I believe in , trust and love my God is because He is the only foundation that my life can stand on. If I didn't have him in my life i know i would be going to hell in a hand basket. God loved me when i didn't even love myself . He has been my only friend when I had no one else to talk to. In His word Jesus says that no longer will he call us his servants but friends because servants don't know what their master is doing.
God doesn't cause division. People cause division in this world. Jesus said that He isn't of the world so therefore the world hates Him and since I love Jesus in He dwells in me, the world hates me too. It also says in proverbs foolish is the man who says there is no God. Would you look at a painting and say there is no painter?? You don't need anyone to prove that because you see the painting. Well don't you see the grass and the sky and people walking down the street? God is the ultimate Creator, the Author and Finisher, Beginning and End.

Well, I am sure you believe in things that cannot be proven exist. For example, maybe you believe in the Big Bang Theory which talks about the universe being created in a single event at one little point in space. There is no proof at all that this theory is true, but I'll bet you believe it is. Why? What's the point of believing it?
I bet you believe in the Theory of Evolution espoused as truth by most biologists, paleontologists, and so forth, but I bet you can't show me prove that Evolution, on the grand scale, exists where one life form gradually modifies to become another life form. I haven't seen any proof of it. Yet you probably believe that. Why? What's the point in believing it?
I bet you believe anything that any scientist says because you assume he knows more about everything than you do and he has all kinds of resources to understand the truth that you don't have. I'll bet you, personally, cannot prove anything is true and yet you believe. Why?
Same reason we believe things we cannot prove.

Religion causes division, not belief.
I believe because it makes sense to me. I know that I have no proof and I don't feel the need to make anyone else believe in God.
Religions that claim to be the only right way and spread man made religious bull$hit cause division in this world.

Without GOD there is no piont. it's like believeing in air , you can't see it but you know it's there. like gravity , there are a great many things we can't see yet we know them to be real. If you look with open eyes you prove God is real . without him there would be no anything . the design of this world is set just right for humans and other life forms, could you really believe that all this happened by chance, does not every house have a builder. could you just mix a bunck of nuts and bolts in a bag shake it and out comes a clock. no you can't and that in itself shows there is a GOD.

I believe in my god, because he has proven himself to me.
I don't give a damn if anyone else believes or not, how exactly does that cause division?

because some people have the need to feel dependant upon something. they cannot live life thinking there is no point to it. and they refuse to find another point other than to worship a being who they think created them.
