Sony didn't make their own plasma panels. They were made by Panasonic and when the contract finished it wasn't renewed, besides Panasonic needed the manufacturing capacity for themselves.
Some people said that Sony left the market to avoid the price war with China/Korea only Sony know why.

Plasma screens are good for 10+ years now (Panasonic claim 60,000 hours)

Sony now concentrate on LCD and SXRD (projection)

just because the technologhy of Plasma fails so much. and at the end, isn't a business for Sony to sell today and repair tomorrow (plus the damage of the image to the company). So Companies are focusing more on LCD screens that fails a lot less than plama TV's.

because plasma tv's are rubbish, they only last a few years and then the pixels start to go. LCD tv's are the future
