She should absolutely get what she wants. Not sure why size has to come into play. No point in picking out any old something just to test the waters.
Some start out with small tattoos because they are worried about the pain, and then quickly realize when it's all over that it isn't that big a deal.

its all about what your friend wants. if she wants this tattoo and it means something to her let her get it. it may seem like a big jump but what would you suggest, a bunch of small meaningless tattoos or one big piece of artwork that means everyting. if your concerned ask your friend to really think it over before she gets it and after she came up with a decision ask her to wait a few more weeks to make sure thats what she is sticking with.

i have several tattoos but i wouldnt make a suggestion about size but more of the meaning and commitment that your friend is making.

even as a tattoo artist i run into the same problem myself, there will be a tattoo i want and then a week before i get it done i decide to get something different, change color, or location.

The problem with getting a little "starter" tattoo is you later end up having to cover it up with what you really wanted to begin with. If she knows what she really wants and knows she wants it there for life then you should encourage her. Tattoos are a statement about the person that wears them and some of us just have to make a big statement the first time.

Tattoos, if done right, can turn out very nice, but if it is your first tattoo you should make sure you want this and can imagine yourself having it forever. Just need to remember that you cant change it once it is on.

i say go for it. It's their body. My first tattoo is pretty big also. I currently have three. I have no regrets on any of them. Make sure she really likes the design and has put a lot of thought in it.

as long as your friend is getting something that has meaning to her and is getting it done by a talented artist then she should do a big one. it definitely shows the ability to commit to something. my first couple of tattoos were tiny and i'm glad about that because the artists i got to do them were crappy and if i had gotten larger tattoos it would have been a disaster for my current artist to have to try to cover up. however my first "real" tattoo started out being about seven inches by thirteen inches and quickly grew to cover my entire back. i have no regrets about it because my artist is talented and the tattoo itself is very special to me and representative of myself and my life.

That is entirely up to your friend. If that is what she wants, then she should go for it!

I have 26 tattoos (one new last night) and I wasn't about to listen to anybody about what my tattoos should look like or where they should go.

And, please, do NOT take advice from people that do not have tattoos or people that don't like tattoos.

I always hate it when people think you should start with little tattoos. Why should you get something you don't really want? A "starter" piece that's permanent isn't practical. Your friend should get what she wants.

I would suggest that she really consider if she wants to be stuck with this for the rest of her life....especially when she gets into her later years, and again, whats she going to tell her kids when they want piercings and/or tatoos? Its a tough arguement. But if she really wants it, and thats what she wants, then get it.....dont settle for something smaller jsut because its her first one, that doesnt make sense either.
