I think it's a great idea, it would stop a lot of people owning illegal dogs (though it would not stop it completely) and it would stop a lot of animal cruelty and irresponsible owners. I would be willing to keep a dog if I had to get a licence for it, if you're not then (unless you can't afford it) you surely don't really want a dog that much?

I think all prospective pet owners / already owners should sit a course and only be granted a licence if they can prove they are capable to be owners.
Not just for dogs but ANY living breathing thing that can be classed as a pet.
Here in the UK there is nothing as far as i know (since the 80's i think) and it is amazing the idiots that are allowed to own animals who don't have a clue as to how to treat or look after their animals.
I would buy whatever licence was needed to keep my pets

Dog licenses are required in many cities now. Most cities, though, do not enforce it unless they pick up the dog for something else. Some cities require a license to get a rabies vaccine, and allow the vet to collect the license fee. That's the best way to do it to ensure every dog is licensed.
But in reality, if every city started enforcing licenses like that, it wouldn't stop anyone from owning a dog. It usually costs like $2 to $5.
I'd like to see it enforced, and the money used to fund pet-owner education and training.

Where I live ( NH) we've always had to license our dogs! It's a good idea if people would actually do it! Not everyone does and our town is so small it's not on the top of the list to enforce. No animal control officer either. I Do license mine however.

Great idea in theory, but if your talking the UK how many people would actually bother to get a licence.
How many people dont tax their cars?
How many people still drive whilst using a mobile phone?
How many people carry guns?
I think I made the point

I live in CA and licenses are required. When you take your dog in for the rabies vaccination, the vet sends the info to the city and they send you the bill/form. You have a certain amount of time to comply before a fee is issued.

I always lived in cities that require dog licences. and I think it is a great idea. but it is not enforced. no staff, no money...
My dogs have a tag pocket with their dog licence, their dog name and contact info, their rabbies tag (dog licence actually requires rabbies certificate).
The cIty of Piedmont, CA has also off-leash dog park licence... I have that too so I can use their dog parks.
great idea!

whatever it is it must be a step in the right direction all i see nowadays is evil looking dogs pulling kids down the road. seems everyone wants their dog to look hard and not many seem to be able to control them.
would the owners have to pass some sort of dog welfare and handling test before they got a licence?

i think every city should have a god license. i moved from a city that required them to a city that doesn't. there is triple the amount of stray dogs in the city that doesn't require them and about triple the amount of mistreated animals also. I'm not sure if the license has anything to do with that but I'm thinking it has to be part of it. the money that you pay for the license helps the shelters. i think its a great idea.
