There was less crime, but that was mostly due to population. There hasn't been as much of a jump as people think, in the 50's most crime was not published in the paper or talked about on TV. A lot of crimes such as domestic violence were seen as OK, and were not reported, or taken seriously at all. Police were also bought off to ignore many crimes by the Mafia, and other gangs. So over all, there wasn't that much of an increase in crime, it is just an increase in the amount of crime reported. Today people call the cops if somebody accidently bumps into them, in the 50's they saw nothing wrong with a fist fight, as long as you stopped before you killed the guy.

No actually the crime rate has decreased since the 50's. I know it sounds strange but in the 50's people did not speak up for most crimes. Many people failed to report rape, assault, murder, ect... Women felt they did not have a right and that they should be ashamed for being raped or that it was their fault. Also, TV shows us all the crime that is happening continuously. They didn't do that then. We have total access to all the info about every crime across the country. People in the 50's did not know of the crime rates or speak of rape, murder, assault. Researchers have proven that with the total unreported crimes percentage (estimate) compared to todays, we have a decrease in crime. So next time someone around you says "Theres so much crime now days" you can tell them about the decrease in crime.

probably several reasons and thoughts ... here is one...

ever think the crime has increased because the population increased??? Also, a good number of kids have no respect for life or property a DIRECT result of a touch feely group of people that don't allow parents to parent, teachers to teach, etc. The first thing they are taught in school is 'if your parents hit you, call the police'. Sorry, I do believe in spare the rod, spoil the child. It's been proven, Dr. Spock didn't work!If a kid acts up in class, the teacher no longer has the ability to discipline the individual for fear of a law suit..a direct result of idiot parents that think their kid does not evil. Was it better in the 50's..In some respects..yes in otheres no...At lest there wasn't rap in the 50's, one of the root causes of the thugs.

It depends on what kind of crime you are talking about.

There are many things that you might consider criminal today which were not crimes in the 50s. Things like discrimination, segregation, lynchings. Citizens were routinely being denied their civil rights because of associations they had with other politically active people.

So, it really depends on what you consider to be crime.

Crime was virtually non-existent in the 50's. There was great shame in being divorced, gay, addicted, or a criminal and apparently that kept people in line. Wages were good enough that only 1 breadwinner per family was needed - mothers raised their own children. Food and water was better and there weren't so many diseases and 'syndromes'. Taxes were lower and there were less laws restricting personal freedoms. Education was better. We didn't have the third world toilet culture that exists today. I could go on and on........

There were different types of crimes back then. Also some activities classified as crimes today (underage drinking, hate crime, bringing toy weapons to school etc) weren't classified as such back then. Other things such as employee abuse, child molestation etc went unpunished. Gangs, thugs, and violence weren't popularized by the mainstream media, music, and movies back then.

There was also far less media coverage and access to information back then. And this whole "breaking news" dramatization so popular in today's "ratings-based" news wasn't the case back in the 50's. So petty crimes, house fires, fights, racial slurs etc weren't reported. This created the impression that times were safer.

Well one good reason there was less crime back then is that there were fewer people on the planet. With fewer people there was more to go around. Also, people weren't so distant and the food consumed was better (less junk food and more minerals in the soil where food was grown, red meat was not loaded with hormones to make the animals grow faster, on and on). With better food people are more nourished and thus there are less mental disturbances making criminals.

Because there were half as many people then.
Most worked in Factories and went to Church.
Moms were MARRIED and stayed home to mind the kids, at least until they started school.
There were no WALMARTS or "Big Box" stores hardly any Super Markets. All of those functions were provided by small family run businesses.
Finally people died in thier 60's leaving an inheritance to thier offspring.

There were less people to commit crimes in the 50's. There were, in fact less crimes then as well. It was also harder to get evidence then and harder to track people with little or no ties to any community.

Maybe not; I guess the difference is that now we have instant access to what happens all around the globe, instantly. So we know what, when and where things happen; in the past, we didn't; we only knew of a few cases, a long time after they had taken place, or when it had happened to someone we knew...
