Think like the TSA agent - and what they are looking for.
First (like another said) think metal. Shoes, belts, jewelry, wallet, empty pockets. Even the foil from a pack of Certs have set off the detector for me. Take off any kind of jacket or sweatshirt, and put it on the scanner belt.
Second - make sure that ALL your liquids in anything that you are not checking in baggage - is legal, and in appropriate size bottles and in the 1 qt. size clear plastic bag. A 1/2 gallon bag will not be accepted.
Third - if you get questioned on anything. Be polite. If they ask to look through your bag, say " Sure - no problem " and do not show an attitude. The T.S.A. agents are people also, and have dealt with all types. They don't want to be treated rudely, or questioned by you. If you are a jerk, plan on being treated like a jerk and being delayed even longer.
Be as inconspicuous as possible - smile - and you should be on your way.
And by the way - first class tickets have never made a difference for me, other than going through a shorter line.

And ditto to your "suck it up and just do it". It will make your life easier.

Omit metal from your outfit. And your pockets. Some shoes contain metal. That's why thay have to take them off.
