Let me start by saying that we tried to get her spayed but i live in a small town in rural ontario with only one vet and they said they wouldn't do it until she was atleast 8 months old.

My puppy is about 7 months old and in heat. All our neighbourhood dogs (for miles!) are female, so i thought we were safe, but a neighbour has a friend's dog staying with them and i didn't know. I've been more careful now that i know there is a male dog around, but i'm afraid they may have had contact before i found out. My dog is still bleeding, so does that mean that we got lucky and she's not pregnant? Or do they keep bleeding even after being impregnated?

Please don't tell me to get her spayed right away. The vet won't even make an appointment yet.

A female dog will bleed when coming into season for about 1 week, then usually on the 10th day of her heat cycle the bleeding will stop and she will permit a male dog to breed her.She will stay in season up to three weeks thereafter. From your question,I would think your female is still coming into season and hasn't bred yet.

A dogs heat last 21 days or 3 weeks
they come in from 1-7 days, the ussual time they can actually be bred is 7-14 days and then going out from 14-31 days but I wouldn't take any chances at anytime during teh heat.
They normally bleed the first and 3rd week.
This doesn't matter if they have been bred or not.
Do realize a male can smell a female upto 5 miles away so it really doesn't matter about your neighbors.
I wish you luck
AT 4 weeks along teh vet should be able to determine if she is pregnant and if not then get her done as soon as you can to her being the 8 months old. If you decide to let her have pups let her wean them and get her fixed or the vet may offe to abort teh pups and get her done anyways at 8 months
Just thought you would like the options.

I hate to tell you this but no. Just because the dog mates doesn't mean the next day she will not be in heat. A dog can mate several times during a heat and with more than one dog. You could end up with puppies that look all different with several different dads. So as long as your dog is in heat being careful means never letting the dog out on its own and always walk on a lead. You might be lucky this time but get your dog on the list as soon as possible. And never let a dog in heat outside alone no matter what dogs your neighbors have. Male dogs have been known to travel miles looking for a female in heat. I would be more careful. Evita

This depends how long she's been in heat. A female won't let a male breed her until the second week of her cycle. They will continue to bleed , even if a sucessful mating has happened. The best thing to do is while she's in heat never leave her outside unattended. I'd try to get another vet that could spay her earlier, even if you must go out of town to do it.

They can still bleed if they are impregnated. Males will come from miles away if they smell a female in heat so you really need to be careful no matter what.
If your puppy is 7 months old, she is plenty old enough to spay her. Get her spayed when this heat ends.

The actual time when she is ready does not happen until after the bleeding stops, then you need to watch out. They will first bleed for 10-12 days, after that you will need to keep your eyes on her (keep her inside) for another 10-12 days.

she can be pregnant and still bleed for a few days, but ever in heat they should not bleed for a extended period of time, contact your vet and ask them how long they are in heat and when you should be concerned over the bleeding

usually they stop. Hopefully, for your sake, and hers, she has not been bred, just keep her inside or away from where he might have access to her, if he was near her, hopefully it was not the right "time", since they cannot get prego during the whole heat, only certain days are fertile.....
heat lasts about 3 weeks, on week bleeding, on week less, one week more bleeding.. the middle is when you need to be extra dilligent, actually the whole time is wisest..

i didn't even know dogs could get pregnant at the age of 7 months, wouldn't it still be a puppy? i dont think pregnancy is the problem, i think there's just something wrong with her system. usually dogs dont have a litter until they're at least 1 yr.
