it would depend on the dog. some become less active after being spayed but most likely not. If the dog is gaining some weight switch to a low calorie food or cut back the serving amount and all will even itself out, but don't forget the exercise. Older dogs tend to gain more weight afterwards more so than younger ones who are more active.

No, it's not true. Adequate exercise and the right amount of food will keep your dog in shape. I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you don't understand about the answers people give you. You've asked this question many times now, and you're getting the same answers every time. Don't worry about your dog gaining weight after her spay. As long as you exercise her and give her the right amount of food, she'll be fine. Several of my friends have spayed dogs and they never got fat after their spay. In fact, they're in very good shape because they get enough exercise, eat the right amount of food, and don't get fed many table scraps. Relax. Your dog won't get fat just by being spayed.

No, it is not true.

You keep asking the same question. You'll keep getting the same answers.

I show dogs. I did an emergency spay on a 4 year old b*tch I bred. We had to decrease her food intake because she started gaining weight. At age 11 (yes, 11 years 3 mos and 10 days) she WON a Specialty Show (show only for her breed of dog) from the veteran's class over 100 other dogs of her breed (all but one of them younger...nice of them to have such a round number).

She was NOT fat (obviously) because we decreased her caloric intake (she ate lots and lots of raw carrots and green beans). She holds the record for her breed for oldest dog to win a Specialty Show.

Basically I kept an eye on her and when she would start gaining weight I'd decrease her food portion. If she got a bit thin I'd increase it a bit.

No! For the millionth time....

You have asked about your dog getting fat after spaying quite a few times. I would think with all the answer you've received, you would know the answer by now. *OR* maybe you could try and do some research on your own....try picking up the phone and asking your vet.

The dog's metabolism will slow slightly after the surgery....that does not mean it will get fat.

Everyone is right...the answer is NO. I am really concerned for YOU, that you seem so obsessed over weight, that you are obsessing over your DOG'S weight like this...dog's should not be overweight, but to deny her the health benefits that come from a spay over concerns that she could get fat, I am really worried about YOU.

Honey chill out ok! Im tired of answering this question. Reproductive hormones do not have any effect on weight gain or loss. The reason why dogs gain weight after spaying is because their owner is still feeding them a high calorie, high energy diet to a dog that no longer needs as many calories. Its just like people, when you are younger you need a lot of calories to function and you have a higher metabolism so you dont gain weight really. When you are older your metabolism drops and your need for such a high calorie diet drops because you dont need near as many calories to function. People gain weight because they continue to intake the same amount of calories even though they dont need them. Dogs are exactly the same way. As they reach adult age they do not need all of the calories they were receiving as a puppy. There metabolism drops and if they continue to eat the high calorie diet you feed them at a young age they will gain weight. You need to feed her a lower calorie diet properly measured out to fit her age, breed and weight requirements. You also need to make sure that she is receiving plenty of exercise. Girl honestly you dont need to worry about your dog gaining weight, she wont, trust me. Even if she does gain a little bit of weight whats the problem? As long as she is not 5lbs or more over weight she is still healthy. Are you so wrapped up in your own weight problems that you feel you have to control your dogs as well?
-EDIT-
Girl dogs do not make fun of others for being overweight, Dogs dont go around snickering at the fat dogs at the dog park! This isnt high school! Dogs dont give a rats behind! Dogs dont even realize they are overweight. You are putting human feelings onto your dog by saying her feeling were hurt, and her sister dog was making fun of her! Thats a load of crap darling. Ok your dog will NOT gain weight from being spayed. Since you dont believe me or well anyone for that matter I will bombard you with a list of links and articles about this so that you may see for yourself that you are freaking out about absolutely nothing!

I have never heard this before. I have two large breed dogs - and they're both spayed. One is a bit overweight....but the other is not at all.

No! Male dogs will gain muscle though, especially if you have bred him before. My dog, Butch was a skinny minnie before we neutered him, and now he looks very muscular and pretty good! And please stop asking the same question 20 times, if you don't think you've recieved the right answer, look it up on wikipedia or call the vet!!

I spay or neuter all my dogs, the only one that's fat is the one that rides in the semi.
