I have 2 yorkies, one which is very small, weighing around 3lb's if that, and one which is 4 and a half to 5 pounds. Are they both still considered as toy size or is the larger one a miniature?

Thanks for the answers. My smallest is 6yrs old, very fit and very healthy. He was the runt of the litter and the last one available, but he has excellent health and his size has never been an issue.

the breed standard for yt breed is up to 7 pounds
the weight you have decsribed for both of your yorkies is breed standard .
the larger yorkie is the older type yorkie and definitely not miniature some of them can weigh 10lb or more.
the kennel club does not recognise the yorkie as miniature it is a expression used by some breeders but i no what you mean

No such thing as a "Miniature" or "toy" Yorkshire Terrier. The Breed Standard states nothing about "Miniature" or "Toy" varieties, only that weight "must not exceed 7 pounds." If you have a dog over 7 pounds, it is a poorly bred one, bred outside of the breed standard. Of course, just because your dog matches the breed standard size, doesn't mean you don't have a poorly bred Yorkshire. The only way to know how well-bred your dog is, is by showing in Conformation.

Yorkshire Terriers only have one breed standard. There aren't toy or miniature Yorkshire Terriers. According to the AKC, a Yorkshire Terrier should not exceed 7 pounds. If that's the case, a three pound Yorkshire Terrier will still be a regular Yorkshire Terrier but only on the smaller side.

Yorkshire Terries come in only one standard size, there are no toys or miniatures that would Poodles that you are thinking of. The Yorkie should have a well balanced body and not weigh over 7lbs. You have an undersized Yorkie, which is proof of bad breeding, and an average sized Yorkie. Bad breeders will put names like toy, teacups, petite and what not on tiny unhealthy puppies in order to lure uninformed buyers to pay big bucks for these dogs.
-EDIT-
Ok heres the deal there is a breed group of dogs called the Toy group. There are also the Sporting group, Hounds, Non Sporting, Herding, Terrier and Working group. These are the groups that every dog breed fits into based on its purpose. For instance The German Shepard Dog is shown in the Herding group because they were originally bred for herding. Great Danes are shown in the Working group because they were bred as guard dogs. Your dog the Yorkshire Terrier is shown in the Toy group. It is considered a Toy breed because of its small size and it was bred to be a companion for royalty. It does not however come in Toy or Miniature sizes. The Yorkie as I explained only comes in one size. Poodles come in 3 sizes because the other 2 sizes were bred down from thhe Standard. So there you have it for people seeming to doubt me. TheYorkshire Terrier is in the Toy group when it comes to AKC breed groups but there is not a Toy or Miniature size denotation for the breed.

Yorkies only come in one size. There is no mini or toy yorkies. The AKC standard says that the weight is not to exceed 7 pounds.

Yorkies should weigh up to 7lbs - that is the maximum that they should weigh. Unlike most other breeds, b1tches used for breeding tend to bigger than the dogs to prevent whelping problems. Responsible breeders will use a small dog to keep the breed to the correct size but will not use a very small b1tch who may be too small to be bred from.

Yes there is such a thing as toy breeds, and a Yorkie just happens to be one. For the people being associated with the AKC they should know that. Yes Yorkie's should not weight over 7 lbs. or they need to going on a special diet of prescription food. Like Science Diet Weight Management. Or Royal Canin Weight Control. Different types of bloodwork may also need to be done. That is something a licensed Veterinarian needs to deal with

No such thing as toy or teacup, it just means that the mama could not supply enough nutrients to supprt the health of the yorki, or she has been overbred. either way the puppy was malnurished when it was born. Just keep on eye on its health, and if you are thinking about breeding I would not recommend it because of its small size. They are not standard but they are small breed.

They're both just Yorkies - one is smaller, the other is bigger. There's no miniature, toy, teacup, or anything else. Yorkies are Yorkies.
