The best place for your boyfried to get answers from is the ROTC office at his college and/or a recruiter. To fly, he would need to join either the Air Force or the Navy and he will have to have a collefe degree as only officers are allowed to be pilots. Generally, when doing ROTC there is a minimum of 7 years active duty required, with additional time in as a reservist afterwards. He should also be aware that pilots slots are limited and highly competetive. He is far more likely to end up flying transport planes than passengers/jets. Again, the best place for the information he wants is from the people who run the programs, so have him make a few calls.

First of all, he should find an aviation school and take care of that before college. A good way to find out what qualifications are needed would be to look it up online...search out some of the major air carriers webites and see what they look for in pilots.

Second, stay out of the ROTC program. I've been in the military and I've been doing it for almost 8 years, but when it comes to education (especially flight school, etc.) the training will take twice as long and be 1/2 as thorough as an accredited flight school.

Most of the people who enter the flight schools for the military never end up flying for the military. The ones who do are typically flying planes that aren't even used by commercial carriers, which means even if he does enter the military he'll need more training and school when he gets out.

Like I said, his best bet is to just talk to a pilot in order to get their advise.

Good Luck...

Oh, and one more thing about the military....if he joins to become a pilot, and then finds out three days later that he can't be a pilot for some reason, there's no going back...they'll find a new job for him and he'll be stuck in a contract which just ends up using more of the time that he could be using for school.

the ROTC he chooses should be for the Branch he intends to get a Commission in.

Engineering is a very good Degree program, he should strive for a 3.5 or better GPA.

They do NOT select their Designator/Community until just prior to Graduation. He must pass the Flight physical to have a shot at Aviation, and then he will get to request it. if they have a slot available, he could get lucky.

minimum service requirement is 5 years. some programs are as high as 8 years.

No guarantees he can fly commercially afterwards. he'd still have to get a commercial Pilot's license.

1. any enginerering degree will work.

2, It needs to be Air Force or Navy ROTC

3, Nothing can guarentee flight school.

The slots for flight school are competitive, based on GPA, previous flight experience, leadership ability,

And of course you have to make an acceptable score on the AFAST test.

4. After Flight school, the commitment is 8 years, 10 years in the navy.

5.No he will not be a commercial pilot afterwards.

But he will have the training, to enter a commercial flight school to get the rating's one needs to be a commercial pilot.
