It's interesting that all the people who have responded here aren't members of Direct Buy. I am a member, so I probably have more authority to speak on the subject than the others who have.
If you want to find negativity on the internet about Wal-Mart or McDonald's, it's easy to do. If you want to find something negative about Direct Buy, that's easy to do too. Some people here have suggested reading such things. But if you want to make an educated decision for yourself, then the best way to know you made the right decision for yourself is to go to one of the meetings and learn about it.
The problem that a few people have with Direct Buy is that people want everything for nothing. Yes, you pay a membership to be a part of the club, that's why it's a "membership club." You pay to be a part of the club, and then you buy stuff directly from the manufacturers who make it. That's cost, not wholesale.
To answer your questions, I've been a member for about 2 years. Yes, it is very easy to shop at my local club, it's sort of one stop shopping. I've bought tires for my car and pillows for the bed in the same visit.
It has been worth it to me. I haven't recouped my membership dues yet with the savings I've seen, but I know that I will. That's kind of the point of it, you don't get the money back the next week....but it does come back to you. After it does, then you're buying like the stores get to everyday.
I realize it's not for everyone, but I'm thankful for it. I'm saving money every time I make a purchase. My local club has about 4000 members. I know they have about a million members nationwide.
Maybe all those people know something that the nay-sayers don't. Maybe that's because they actually tried it.

I went to a sales pitch for UCC Total Home (which is now Direct Buy I believe, either way, same idea). The pitch was high pressure (e.g., either you join tonight or you aren't allowed back for at least a year), you can't look through the catologues until you have paid the exorbitant membership fee (so you don't know what products they carry or what the prices are), you cannot return anything unless it is defective (e.g., if it looked different in the catologue than when it arrives, tough luck), etc. We are in the process of re-doing our entire house, and I would still never even consider joining.

Do Not Do It!!!!!!! I went to see what it was all about. You pay so much a year to have a membership. They get the products you want, but you have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to get it. Then they don't deliver. And if there is not one in your town, then you have to take time to pick it up. They don't save you a lot of money, but there is some savings. But if you can wait for your stuff, then it is worth it. The stuff that they have on hand in the store is for display only.

If you do a web search for this company you will see a lot of people unhappy with them. Basically, it's a catalog showrrom in which you order "wholesale". They will not let you see any of their prices before you pay for the membership and their sales approach is akin to Time Share properties. The membership is expensive and the prices aren't any better than Costco or Sam's Club. I absolutely wouldn't join.

Membership is around 3 grand. It's definitely worth it if you are doing a $20,000 project or replacing all of your appliances at once. But it is a high pressure pitch like time shares. If you're not sure, don't go.

High priced, high pressure and poor service. I have included a link to customer complaints.
