I don't think it is dark or goth at all...infact it can look great if you do it in the right way!
Here are some examples of rooms to hopefully give you some ideas:

It's a very mod color.
You can do alot of color combinations.
If you want, also learn more about fengshui and how colors affect your pysche and mind.
Violet is known to have high vibrations and can influence the mind for reaction.
Green and yellow has been known to work well in stimulating senses
Red has been known for energy
Black has been known as a grounding color, anything above the eyelevel makes the room small and unkempt. it's mostly used for floors and trimmings.Try the color grey or light grey instead.
White has been known for completion and low vibrations in the room.
Try light grey, white, and light teal/green/blue to enhance your mentality, career, and health, and to make your space look larger.

If you have a small room, black would be a very bad choice, it makes the room seem even smaller than it is.
If you don't have a small room and you're going for a goth look, then it's awesome!

I would accent in those colors, painting them is too bold and I think you would tire of it quickly, how about the blues and browns. They look good together. Blue Walls and Blue and Brown bedspread, with coordinating accents.

Yes. I wouldn't use too much of the red as it is such a strong color. Maybe in curtains, lamps, pillows, that kind of thing.
