When I was seven or eight, I demanded from my parents (who are modern minded people) to send me to the mosque for "quran lessons", because some other girls were going. I could tell they were surprised, but they allowed me.

I memorized a verse, went to the mosque, failed to repeat the verse (failure is a big motivation killer for me), saw that what the kids were doing was only memorizing sounds, and never went to this "quran lessons" again.

Later, when I were curious about what was said in the book, I was able to find Turkish translations and check the actual verses. Even today, I consult the Minister of Theology version of the translation from the net, along with the Old and New Testaments on other sites.

From that first experience on, I have always found memorizing verses in Arabic quite stupid. That's what Christians did in the Middle Ages, i.e. memorize verses in Latin. It is past time people knew their religion well.

As hurricane stated it is family related. Some people learn it in early ages, some people later, some people don't learn at all.

We don't know and understand Arabic so some of us prefer to learn the prayers and surahs with Latin alphabet, and pray accordingly. We also have translated version of Koran in Turkish and it can be referred for the meaning.

Learning is one thing reading another.I can't read arabic- but I read parts of translations-it depends on your parents religiosity and on your own interest in spirituality. There are not many people who can understand what they read.

it is all related with your parent's mind about islam.i mean if your parents are religious they teach you how to pray and read quran at the age of 6.But if your parents are not religious, just like my parents, they never teach you.Actually i still don't know how to pray at the age of 21.
