When your young and you first shave your legs, armpits or anywhere else does the hair change over time. From shaving so much does it get thicker or longer? Would it get thicker the older you get even if you dont shave?

This is a bet, so i have money on it.

all it does is makes the ends blunt instead of tapered so it does look thicker but it actually isn't. as for weather it gets thicker and longer as you get older that depends on your genes, normally it does but some people it never happens, either way shaving has nothing to do with it

I can't say for my legs or underarms because I've never let the hair grow out. I do shave my arms and have let the hair grow back once (for three weeks) to see what it was like. (then promptly shaved it off) When if first started to come in it appeared that the hair is thicker but once it grew in completely it was the same consistancy as it was before. Not thicker or longer. I don't believe the myth that shaving makes it come in thicker.

No, shaving your hair does NOT have anything to do w/it getting "thicker" or "longer". We all have "x" amt. of hair follicles, & that w/not change thru shaving. It just seems like we just shaved & there it is again!! When we get older, our hair DOES begin to thin out & we DO have LESS. Therefore we really don't have to shave our legs as often or our arnpits. I don't know what your bet was, but this is the TRUTH. I know this for a fact....if it helps, I learned this in cosmotology school which I graduated w/a managers/operators license!

Yes. When you first shave you will notice your hair is very fine. However, the blunt cut of a razor at the base of the hair will cause your hair to grow out thicker from then on.

Changes in your hair can change over time but it has nothing to do with shaving. I for example have been shaving for years - since I was 13 and I still have very little hair, its still very fine and soft, and I only have to shave a couple times a month. It has more to do with your genes than with shaving. I also have little more than down on my arms, and the hair on my head is also very fine.

I tell you though, I'd take course leg hair and nice thick hair on my head any day - but we all want what we don't have.

It doesn't actually make your hair grow longer or thicker. Some people think it grows thicker because when you shave it, it grows back with a blunt end rather than a tapering, natural end, so it appears thicker, but it actually isn't.

Think about it - your hair comes from inside your body. How can trimming it on the outside of your body affect the root inside?

I don't know any of the serious male swimmers on my daughter's team who do not shave for big meets. And if they have really hairy legs, they will shave the entire season. It does reduce drag quite a bit. And the girls don't seem to care either way. It's just a regular part of the sport.

My grama told my mom and her cuzns never to shave their legs so they wouldnt have hair on them.
My ma never did and to this day doesnt have one hair on her legs
Now i do have hair on my legs...and i shaved a few times but over the last year i stopped.
It gradually gets thinner and stops growing altogther.

If you do it gets thicker because by shaving you are injuring the hair causing it to get thicker. Like a defense mechanism.

the may clinic answer is right
but let me further answer your question

your hair can change over time the older you get..
when you are a small child you have finer hair
when you hit puberty.. your hair changes into adult hair
after that it should stay the same as far as thickness goes
but.. when you get into menopause your hair can thin and fall out on your legs and arms

your hair can never grow longer
the hair has memory ...
like your eyebrows and your eyelashes
notice that they grow to a certain length and no longer

shaving your hair makes it prickly and not soft when it grows back... when you wax it.. you will notice how much softer it grows back.. waxing can also thin it out because the pulling on the hair can damage the hair bulb and it wont grow back
even on your eyebrows.. that's why it's important to pull out the exact ones you want out.. you could end up with hair that will never grow back

hope this helps

Hair gets thicker and more brittle.

Guys dont generally get full beardds unless they start shaving. Shaving stimulates the folicles and makes them produce hair.

Older hairr is more brittle. The same sort of issues that give you split ends give older people issues even when their hair is short.
