Emmie - come on down! You'll be most welcome downunder.
The only time most Aussies get "cheesed off" with immigrants is when they come here for "a better life" and then start criticising & expecting us to change OUR way of life to accommodate them.
We really are a friendly bunch. We love our country passionately (tho we may not be as vocal or arrogant about it as some) and we treasure our lifestyle. The vast majority of us embrace multiculturalism and enjoy the rich diversity that immigrants bring to our lives, but we DO have a culture of our own, we are very, very proud of it and we DO object to it being criticised and compromised to suit newcomers.
Having said that - as a general rule, we think the poms are alright :-) Do the right thing by us, and don't you worry, we'll reciprocate!
Tuppenybitz - I hear what you're saying - but we ARE an underpopulated country. Discouraging good folks like Emmie is not going to solve anything. Emmie's just the kind of "new Aussie" we need :-)

Lee, I doubt if even the Brits could argue that Australia isn't a extra effective place to stay than England!! that's a methods extra effective, a methods much less crowded and dreary, and the English are certainly icy chilly and unfriendly. (no longer the Scots or the Irish inspite of the undeniable fact that, nor the British Guyanan pal I had in London. Sorry Welsh human beings, i did no longer get to fulfill you, so won't be able to remark!) the hassle-free of residing is plenty greater in Aus, the nutrition is infinitely extra effective (aside from the curries!), the beer is extra effective, the properties, the fees of pay, and so on and so on. no longer that i'm putting down the Brits, innovations you!! As for why the English are like that, God in basic terms knows.... Australians are as different as any united states on earth, yet our existence-type is in lots of circumstances extra comfortable (even inspite of the undeniable fact that from what human beings say, no longer in Sydney, lol.) Australians normally choose to relish existence, have events and barbecues, love their activities, drink too plenty, love the sea coast and the pool, and are quite often no longer very interested in politics or something psychological. i'm between the exceptions.

Not really. It is the immigrants that come over and don't bother to learn our language and customs that annoy us. So many people move here and disagree with things and say that would never be allowed where they were. But so what?? Do I go to Iraq and expect Aussie girls to be walking down the street in a bikini? Of course not because they don't do that over there so we respect it.
England and Australia are so similar it doesn't really matter. Expect to get teased alot though, it's all a bit of fun but in the end Australia is just a better country in every facet and we like to remind you of that.

In my area of Perth WA there are many UK immigrants and I certainly don't have a problem with it. They are all lovely people (the ones I have met anyway) and there are even speciality UK stores where you can buy anything you want from the UK. Most supermarkets now have a UK section as well with all kinds of different yummy foods.
My son is in preschool and it seems that nearly a third of his class is made up of UK kids and he is best friends with a few of them.
So I really don't see the problem myself and although you do hear people mention it in a negative way every now and then, it's not the way I think.
Good luck on your move. I am sure you will love it here.

The figure is between 70,000 and 80,000 a year, not 400,000. Why should we be annoyed? We get immigrants from most countries and they bring with them cultural diversity making this a wonderful cosmopolitan country to live in.
