I've decided it's best to avoid too much exposure to natural and artificial U.V. rays. In my opinion, having a deep brown tan isn't even that attractive (the leather bag look!).
Now that I've read this article I'm convinced. What a tragic story. I feel so very bad for her and others like her.
I also heard about a woman in Paris who was dis-figured (3rd degree burns) a few years ago because she was forgotten about and trapped in a tanning bed !!!
How horrifying !
Let them ban it ... who needs it ...? There are more and more safer options now in order to get an artificial tan anyhow.
EDIT : To all of these people who have a problem with banning things.
Okay, the alternative is that we do not ban anything !
Instead, let's legalize everything that is considered extremely harmful.
Think about it : Wife beating, drink driving, heroine, cocaine, ...
According to you, we are all adult enough and know our limits....
I don't believe that. I think that people need guide lines and to be given limitations in some cases.
Call me a dictator if you like ! ;)

Tanning beds should not be banned for one simple reason and it's in the form of a question. Do you like the government telling you what to do? Too much of anything is bad for you. Eating too much food can kill you. Should we regulate how much you can eat in a day? Driving has shown to have a greater risk than almost everything you do that can kill you. Should we ban driving? Too much drinking causes sclerosis of the liver which kills you. Too much sun can give you skin cancer as well, should we limit people how many times they can go to the beach?
Where does it end? If the government regulated everything that could harm you they'd be telling you when you have to wake up, how long and how much sleep and eating you can do, how much you can drive etc.
The point here is that if you do anything long enough, often enough it can cause severe health problems that have severe consequences leading up to death. Moderation is key and that is what I tell all my patients when they ask me if something is okay to do. You have to use common sense when doing so. Obviously going tanning every day is going to put you at a very high risk for skin cancer.
And at what point will we say, will you say, that provided we do not violate the law other people cannot dictate what we do in the privacy of our own homes.

That is extremely sad. She is exactly the same age as me. I am very fair complected and do not tan. I don't get a whole lot of natural sun and I definitely don't tan in tanning beds. I think that people should stop doing things just because it's "cool" and it's what everyone else is doing. People really need to stop and think about what they are doing to their bodies. All of the risks and warnings are clearly posted, and research is readily available if you are willing to take the time to take care of yourself and your body. Sadly enough it is your decision if you want to take the risks. Love to all...

Yes ban them and ban the sun too and cars because people die in them every day. People have known about tanning beds and the sun for ten years or longer. Because one person (as admitted in the article) follows a path that caused her damage we all jump up and scream we want something banned. What would you like banned next knives because someone in Northern Canada cut himself and bled to death.

no they shouldn't.... why not ban cigarettes, and alocohol and artery clogging foods etc? .....too much of anything is dangerous...the women's situation is very unfortunate and yet so is the misconception that tanning beds are solely to be blamed for skin cancer. I know someone who has skin cancer, she wore sunscreen EVERY single day, never even went out in the sun...and yet she got skin cancer....so the sun, and tanning beds cannot be fully blamed.

we have had this here in uk,
sadly, vanity makes people want to look good and as such they desire to be tanned .
it is their choice, and if sun beds are banned, they will find another way of getting the required shade if brown,
i would never use one, and i am happy to be a shade of pale pink, just as it was intended.

well I think that article says it all. Of course they should be banned. There's pills on the market that give you a great tan.

nope...if a person wants to pay to increase the odds of getting skin cancer that is their prerogative. the info regarding the correlation between tanning beds and skin cancer is decades old and is nothing new.
