Citalopram is an SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is used promarily for depression and has it's stongest effects on that disorder. It has been tested for panic disorders (anxiety) and has shown some effect, though complete information is not available at this time. It may also have some effect on obsessive-compulsive disorder. It has not shown any statistically significant effect on weight.
All that being said, I took Celexa as a trial for a nondepression, nonanxiety problem so I cannot speak to the effectiveness of the drug on those issues from personal experience. However, I have had significant success with the medication in patients of mine with depresssion issues and it seemed to help some with anxiety. Though I'm not sure that controlling depression doesn't, in itself, relieve some anxiety.
I have not had any significant weight gain or loss myself, or with my patients, which can be attributed to this drug. I have had significant complaints of increased sweating and headache, which are noted to be common side effects by the company, and are the most common complaints by my patients. Nausea and vomiting complaints are also heard but they are heard with every drug including those used to treat nausea and vomiting.

I haven't put weight on but I have noticed that I am so tired all the time and sleep a lot during the day. I also have blurry vision at times since being on them. However, they do tend to make me feel calmer but I want to come off them eventually. They will not cure my anxiety, only mask the symptoms. I want to try hypnotherapy as I have heard this is usually successful. Try your tablets and if you experience any unwanted side effects, go back to the Docs who will suggest another form of medication. Good luck x

I have never heard of that antidepressant, but most antidepressants do not make you gain weight because along with treating depression, anxiety, etc., they are also used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Now if you graduate to antipsychotics, like Zypreza, Risperdal, and those, then yes, they are notorious for weight gain. Antidepressants do not make you "happy" - I always explained it as your emotions (whatever they are, happy, sad, angry) being a pot of water on the stove, the antidepressant keeps the water from boiling over.

depression is far more likely to encourage weight gain than the tablets you take to counter it. i'd make sure you have a few days free to yrself, as sometimes they can knock you right out for a couple of days. depending on why yr taking them, i'd say that as they've been prescribed by yr doctor, the benefits should outweigh the side effects.

My friend is on them and thinks they are great...
each to thier own...you have to try them for at least a few months to see if they are for you.
didnt put weight on...that was down to the Big Macs and cream cakes.
good luck.
