It seems like unless you qualify for public assistance or are extremely rich, after school programs, sports and positive outlets and much needed after school "daycare" are hard to afford. They are over priced and are time limited ( at least in my area they are ) I'm frustrated and would like to know your experiences on this issue.

I will pay whatever it takes to keep my kids safe and have fun but, it seems like there needs to be more City funded programs that are free or deeply discounted.

I know that for my kids (I was a single parent) there was the "Boys and Girls club". The YMCA also offers alot of programs at low cost (regardless of income) and I know that in most communities, there are "Rec Centers". Also check out what your local schools offer in after-school or summer programs. Another idea is also getting involved with the "Big Brother/Sister" program, their mentor programs are great.
Best Wishes

Yes, when you are working hard to make ends meet, the hundreds of dollars a month that day care charges for a couple of kids is just out of reach. Boys and Girls Club has a minimum age of 8 in my area, and is too far from us to be any use.

A lot of people make it work through a network of friends. There are a lot of girls who have "standing playdates" after school with friends every week, one friend one day, another on another day, and then possibly the YMCA after school one or two days a week.

In a large community, there always seems to be more resources.

But try to live in a rural (small) community and find the support! We lack the public transportation and the resources that are available in larger communities. If you have only one elementary school, and only a few churches with small amounts of people, and the community is poor, there are even less resources available.

So, I definitely agree that we need more programs.

Get busy making it happen, finding the funding or lobbying or whatever it takes. don't wait for others to make this happen for you. take the actions required. don't expect others to set it up for you.
