I ask this because people say christ when talking about jesus.. or jesus christ

FYI, it's actually just a title. Jesus *the* christ or christ jesus are much more appropriate than jesus christ or plain old christ

Christ is not a last name like "Doe" in John Doe or "Bush" in George W. Bush.

Jew's culture during first century did not used "last names" like we use now. Some jews (not all) used the name of the father preceded by the suffix "bar" after the name. Example:
Jonas Barseba or Jonas, son of Seba.

Christ is a title not a name, meaning Messiah.

Christ is a title. It means "annointed one". So in reality, you can say Jesus IS the Christ or call him Jesus Christ.

It's similar with George Bush. We refer to him as President Bush don't we? Other times he is referred to as The President. We don't go around referring to him at The President Bush.

As far as appropriateness? It doesn't matter as long as you use it respectfully.

It is a title in a way, but more accurately an indication of being an incarnation of the Christ.

I have heard people say "Jesus the Christ"...but I can say it is definately not a last name.

As I understand it, Christ is the English version of the Greek version of the Hebrew version of Messiah.

As far as I know the word Christ has a Greek origin and means "the anointed one".

Actuallly, as per Jewish tradition his real name would have been something like "Yeshua Ben Yusef" (Jesus, son of Joseph).
