The Crusades. The Inquisition. The Thirty Years' War. The Holocaust. 9/11.
All religious excuses to kill others.
The ban on gay marriages. The stem cell debate. Religion now stepping on basic individual rights and the ease of human suffering.
How can we stand by and kindly allow this crap to continue? It's not cruelty. It's passion fueled by necessity. We don't aim our venom against those who believe in peace. We aim it at those who are arrogant enough to think that their way is the ONLY way. If you practice your faith without forcing it down the throats of others and we've hit you with a little overspray, for that I at least apologize. You're not our intended target. Otherwise, you WILL hear alternate views and you WILL face argument.
This has gone on for far too long.

I don’t believe it’s the general intention of atheists to appear cruel. Not at all. But sometimes atheists and agnostics (I’m one) appear snarky at times. They have every right to because they are attacked on a daily basis for not believing in Christianity.
Another big part of it is frustration. We are SOOOO frustrated when trying to get a Christian to think a different way and most don’t seem to respond to reasoning and fact. Christianity is not a logical religion (not my words… a Christian said that to me) because it’s based on blind faith and that’s why we get frustrated. We see no reason to believe in something that’s not backed up by facts or logic. Sometimes we feel like we're talking to a wall.

Cruel? For joking about delusionists who call us all names?:
"Unbelievers, sinners, unsaved, demons, devils, abominations, infidels, etc etc..."
The worse I've seen religionists here called is deluded, except by other religionists from other faiths, then the fur really flies.
You people have a concept of the worst thing in all the universe (hell/satan etc) and accuse anyone who doesn't follow yr fairy tale of being in league or under influence of or else bound for that very thing. Could you be more insulting and disrespectful? Check yr side of the fence:

And no, state fascism was not done in the name of atheism, it was done by fundamentalist minds - the very opposite to atheists/agnostics/freethinkers.
Dark ages? You want it? Bring it on, we'll argue and mock while you sharpen your sticks and stones. Just leave my kids out of it.

Atheists are fighting from a defensive position .They are vastly outnumbered by an aggressive Christians majority who are not content with simply living their lives according to their Christian values and letting others live their [ don't you wish we could use italics ? ] lives according to their non-Christian values.
The aggressive Christians want to impose their values on non -believers and in America they don't have the right to do that.
The end result is a minority group that is getting pushed into a corner by the overwhelming majority and when that happens history tells us that best option is to attack-and so we occasionally do.

There are fundamentalists on all sides. I will gladly sit down to a discussion with any empathetic, thoughtful person regardless of thier beliefs or politics; I may even be persuaded to integrate thier views into my own. Prosylitizing, whether it comes from a perspective that I agree with or not, typically makes me feel defensive.

Jeez.. we're not cruel.
As a matter of fact, most atheists comport themselves pretty well on Yahoo Answers, given that they're often accused by theists of having no moral sense and being willfully stupid.

Cruel? No more then Christians and thier "truth and way". Some of them are WAY too happy about other people going to hell and gleefully tell anyone who will listen.

Because religion keeps on trying to mess with my life, and the lives of those around me.
Just stop the interference in laws, politics, medicine, science, reproduction, education, sexuality and war, and I'll say no more about it.
