you can get charcoal in ready to go bags that you just need to light and leave or you can use standard charcoal/briquettes then use fire lighters to start it off.
if you use lighting fuel don't add to much, i made that mistake and melted the lid of my BBQ
(i was drunk tho)

I have never used gas, but probably just push the "light gas" button, or strike a match (older buttons).
Charcoal, use an electric device that heats the charcoal until it catches fire. That way, there is no of that smell from charcoal lighter fluids.

the only way to light a charcoal bbq is to use a charcoal chimney. I use the weber brand chimney starter. its easy to use, you put 2 pieces of crumpled newspaper in the bottom load the top w charcoal and light when your coals get red/gray you pour the charcoal across the grill. the handle never gets too hot so you can pick it up without gloves when you pour the coals out.

Get a chimney starter. See references. They work great and fast, without any lighter fluid. Just put the coals in the top and a crumpled sheet of newspaper in the bottom, light the newspaper and in a few minutes the coals will be ready to dump into the grill. This works much better than trying to light the coals in the grill.

For charcoal, I like the heating elements you plug in and put under the coal for about 10 minutes.

firelighters, 3 or 4 dotted around amongst the charcoal should do it.

They are light using a match

Gas bbqs should have a igniter to light them.
Use a long match or use a Electronic Gas Lighter like the one in the link below.
