I work for 1 officer and have been her assistant the whole 6 years. Because of this horrible market, the company just laid off 6 employees - leaving 3 assistants (luckily I was kept) I was left because of my experience and knowledge and loyalty to this company.
Well, yesterday, the county manager (the one that does the layoffs - my boss' boss) approached me and told me to write down a name and number. He told me he wanted me to go interview with his best friend whom works with "Wall Street." He said he wouldn't and didn't give any other employee this info and knows with the market the way it is, that anything could happen but he wants me to continue on making good money and having a good job because of my "excellent work ethic." He said if I didn't like the job, fine. I still had one here - but he wants me to go interview and talk with him afterwards.

My question is -should I feel complimented, or is this his way of getting rid of me?? He asked me not to speak with my boss..

This is a position in a whole different company - it's not even close to being the same type of business I'm in now.

I would take this as a huge compliment and kind of a way to get rid of you. Let me explain.

My guess is that your company only needs 2 assistants right now, but kept you on because they like you. I would consider this time as your "severance" pay period with your company. Because this guy likes you, he set you up with another opportunity so that you won't have (maybe) to be unemployed.

He didn't want for you to tell your boss because maybe HER job is about to be eliminated. Lots of times these layoffs come in waves, and her/your time is next.

I would jump hard at this other job. It sounds like things are very unstable at your current employer.

It sounds like maybe there are going to be some more layoffs coming, and he's trying to protect you. Your boss's position could also be shaky - maybe that's why he said not to tell her. Or he knows that if you get the other job she'll lose a good assistant, and figures she'd be mad at him for losing you.

If he wanted to get rid of you, he'd just lay you off. So don't feel that's what's going on.

I think it is unproffesional of him to ask you to keep this from your boss that you feel loylaty towards. So the guy is a jerk or he does really like you and is hinting that you may loose your job in the near future.

I would probably tell my boss, that I was going to interview at another place, just to see whats out there in case you end up getting layed off. I wouldn't tell him who told you to go there. (Your boss may figure it out though and might have been given the same name and number). In the end your boss will trust you more.

I guess I would be a little suspisous. It shouldn't hurt to go and interview. It could be the real thing. But make sure you cross your t's and dot your i's before giving notice. Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side.

My question is, why doesn't he want you to tell your boss? Is this a position that is above your current boss?
