First of all: I have ALWAYS wanted to change my first name.
Next: I just moved a thousand miles away from my hometown and I'm now on my own. I enjoy the fact that no one knows me and I get a chance to start over. In I suppose what you could call a "celebration" I have really been thinking that now would be a perfect time to change my name. I finally decided on "Renee". (It's fitting for many, many reasons). However, my older cousin's middle name is Renee. She and I never got along growing up. (She down-right hates me, to put it plainly). However, my question is...What obligation do I have to tell her, if any? Is this proper ettique? I will have to go home for Christmas and New Years, and I'm wondering how she would feel?? Am I over reacting?

It seems you are being more considerate of her feelings than she of yours. Use your new name in your new home, if you still love it after several months, do the paperwork, and maybe keep the name your parents gave you as a middle name.

Don't expect your family to call you by the new name, and don't even mention it to your cousin unless your family decides they do want to use it. Avoid your cousin as much as possible, but be polite when you see her. If she starts snarling, ignore her.

Good luck.

Yes your over reacting. After all if she really hates you like you say who cares what she thinks. If you want to change your name then change it girl. Life is too short to worry about what someone else may or may not think of something that you want to do to make you happy.

why are you basing your decisions on the opinions of others.

do what YOU want.. you don't need permission from everyone named "Renee" ....

and it costs money to legally change your name.. you could probably look into it.

take care.

Maria is a nice name, why would you want to change it? Is it not cool to be Latina anymore or something?

I doubt anyone at home will call you by your new name. So I wouldn't worry.
