I agree completely. Kids need so much sleep, and the school day should be better designed to get more done in less time, instead of just making it longer and longer. They're keeping young, young kids in the classroom for too long w/out age-appropriate stimulation.

Why so early ?
When my boys were in kindergarten, they went either in the morning for 1/2 the year and afternoon for the second 1/2 of the year.
Times were 9 AM for morning and 1 PM for afternoon.
I would find another school as its too early for a 5 year old. In fact, I wouldn't want my 8 yr old having a 7:43 start time. School starts here at 8:45 AM for grades 1 to 7 and 9 AM for K.

If it was any later what would parents who have to be at work by 8 do? The children would still be getting up early to be dropped off at daycare and only benifit the stay at home moms for not having to get up that early. My kids go to bed around 9 ot 10 every night and are still up at 6:30 every morning when I dont wake them up and they are 4 and 2. 7:43 is not too early for classes to start at all. It cost more money for everyone to have children of different ages going to school at different times and with everyone complaining about taxes as it is people are wanting it raised to cover that but lowered because its too high??? Doesnt make any sense to me. I am a stay at home mom so its not like I am saying this because I would have to put my child in daycare. I am saying this because I see where other moms and dads are coming from. Think of a single mother struggling to make rent and the only option when changing the time to later is to decrease her hours or pay out the butt for child care.

Our son's elementary started at 7:35 and we managed just fine. Bathtime was at 8 or 8:30 pm, his bedtime was between 9 and 9:30 and i got him up at 6:45 each morning.
The reason I liked this is because the elementary schools started an hour before middle and high school so the little kids didn't have to ride the bus with the bigger ones that might bully them. They also got more of a chance to relax and play in the afternoon before dinner.
Its all just a matter of getting into the routine. Make it seem like an adventure to your child and they will be fine with it. Good luck!

I've been teaching K for 29 yrs and this seems a little early. Our school begins at 8:30 and most parents think it starts late due to them getting to work later being an inconvenience for them. Could be your child needs to go to bed earlier. It is the beginning of their school career and time to start the responsibility issue whatever the time is. It is usually not about the child as much as it is about the parents and their issues. Sorry. Seems as though children are much more mature these days than 29 yrs ago but if you think your child is not ready for all this encompasses then wait till next year to enroll him. K is not mandated by the state so legally he doesn't have to go till first grade or like I said put him in K next year. This is what I did with my son. Now that he is in college he is older and more mature to take on all the responsibilities college entails.

In a sense I do agree but I am open-minded about this My son catches his bus at 6:45 and he is in first he will be 6 in sept. you need to understand that while it is early they are provided with breakfast and their day ends alot earlier then ours did. I remember getting out of school at 3:30 and not getting home until 4:30 My son gets home at exactly 3 on th dot every single weekday and is ready for bed by 7 his bed time isn't until 7:30. they also fit more things into their day that we didn't have!! so keep in mind that even though he has to get up early... he is also getting home early! It is good for them but you need to make an earlier bedtime if he seems to tired. we went from 8:30 to 7:30 just because of this.

Yes, that is way too early. I am a preschool teacher and our day starts at 9:00 a.m. Right next door, at the early headstart, which has infants and toddlers, they start at 7:45. I don't know why it starts so early, unless it is so parents can get their kids to school before work. But then, school gets out before parents get off from work so it's kind of counter productive. I've seen kids get totally exhausted by the end of a regular day of school; and then have activities on top of that? Little kids have a lot of energy but nowadays they're expected to be doing something structured for a longer period of time than parents work. I think it's too much. Yes, it's too early.
It used to be kids went to school at the age of 5 or 6. Now they're going while still in diapers. That means kids are in school for 17 or 18 years before college.

I believe that if your kid is in Am kindergarten that is a good school start because it gets them ready for first grade.
Kids now start early so they can get done earlier then when we where kids.
I also think that at the end of the kindergarten year they should take the last 2 weeks and have them go all day so they know what to expect for 1st grade.

My son started Head Start when he was 3. He had to be there from 8-4. That's a long day! But they had a nap time at noon and then he came home and played and we spent time together. It didn't bother him at all. He was in school longer than the high schoolers even. I think your child will be fine even though it is an early morning. It's amazing how well kids adjust. It may be a little rough at first but then he/she will get used to it.

Our school started at 8 last year and I thought it would be a problem for my kindergartener. This year they've moved it back to 8:30 and I'm disappointed, lol. You can always put kids to sleep earlier so they get enough rest, but it's wonderful getting them home earlier in the afternoon while there's still plenty of sunlight for playing outside.
Most young kids wake up pretty early, anyway. The age group that really needs to start later is teenagers (and maybe adults, for work)....

Yes, school did traditionally start later in the day back when I was in school as well. However, we also got out later in the afternoon. It was much more common in those days for after school activities to consist of going home for an after-school snack, doing homework, and playing until dinner time. Very few kids participated in music lessons, dance class, foreign language club, sports, etc. Today's after school schedules are packed for many families and I think over time, earlier school starting times with subsequent earlier ending times evolved to accomodate those changing schedules. Each state mandates required instructional time based on number of days or hours, or a combination of both, in a school year. A lot of planning goes into choosing beginning and ending times for schools. Additionally, a lot of factors are considered such as bus routes, number of schools in the district, and number of after school activities offered by the district. While 7:43 is an earlier start time then our school's 8:05 start time, it is still a reasonable time for school to start. Key to getting a good start on the morning is planning ahead. Think about your son's sleep needs. Generally 5 year olds do well on 10 hours of sleep a night. But, all kids are different so adjust according to what he does best on. Build in extra time in the morning for those inevitable lost shoes, missing homework, or dwaddle times. Get everything ready the night before. Put homework in back pack, pack snacks and lunch, lay out clothes, plan breakfast, etc. Yes, it is early, but not too early, it just requires an earlier start to the night before. My 4 kids are now 28, 25, 22, and 10. In less than 2 weeks I'll begin my 24th straight year of getting at least one kid off to school in the morning. Lots of forgotten lunches, lost shoes, milk spilled on homework, missed busses, throwing up, and oversleeping have happened in those years. When those things happen, any start time is too early!
