i have 5 little dogs that have absolutely taken over the house. we love our dogs and do not want to get rid of any of them. we have a baby gate and we crate them in the kitchen, but anytime i let them out of the kitchen...they always end up sneaking around and pooping or peeing in the house! also...when i try to let them outside, they either go outside and stand there or refuse to go out. we try to pick them up and physically walk outside into the middle of the yard with them, but they end up running towards the door! its so frustrating.

we're unsure of what to do in that respect. and also...we can't seem to get some of the urine smell out of the house. we manage to cover it up with air fresheners but that never lasts. and also, we bought a carpet steamer and that seemed to only make it worse!

help us!!

The way to train them is to take them outside and stay with them until they pee and poop. When they do, praise them lavishly and let them back in for 2 hours, then back outside again until they do it again.

Then keep to a schedule. They need to go first thing in the morning and at intervals all day.

Obviously you will have trouble trying to co-ordinate this with so many dogs, but hey, you're the one who had to have 5 dogs.

Call Servicemaster to get the smell out of the house, and keep them in the kitchen until they are trained.

How can you expect your dogs to do anything you want at all when they run your house? Why shouldn't they poo and pee anywhere they please? You give them no rules or leadership to show them it's not ok. Start taking control of the dogs. You need to lead them now. Get out and lead them on daily walks. Don't let them stay inside. Make them walk with you and lead them before you leave and when you return. Establish rules in your house. A gate isn't a rule, it's a way of restricting movement. Your dogs only view the gate and the kitchen as an indoor kennel. When they leave the kennel, the rest of the house is outside to them since you don't make them go outside. That's why they do their business inside your house. Make some simple changes like adding rules and establish yourself as the leader and your dogs will learn what you want and how you want it. Until you decide to step up, pee and poo is all you'll know.

Step 1. Find at a local pet store something that not only cleans it up but neutralizes odor as well. Clean their spots up very well so that they will not continue to smell it and mark it up again. The other dogs are probably coming along and trying to cover up or mark the other dog's smell as in territory marking.
Step 2. Monitor their intake of food and water. What goes in must come out. If you crate the dogs make sure you take them out side immediately, not knowing how long you keep them there. Set yourself a timer like every 40 minutes and take them outside to eliminate. Praise them for going outside to go. Seeing as they don't like to hang around the yard, stay there until they do - however long that takes. They have learned that inside is the bathroom, you need to change that. It will be a battle of mental wills. Stay out in the yard for an hour if you have to. I can assure you, if you do not give in to their game they are playing with you, the time waiting on them in the yard will decrease over time.
Step 3. Monitor the dogs. You need to catch them in the act in order for them to make the association that going inside is not what they are supposed to do. If you see one of them going, clap your hands loudly and quickly while making your way to the offender. Scoop them up and immediately take them out side. Let them finish outside and praise them when they do. Stay their until they do!!

are they fixed?? spaying and neutering will help..
I suspect they were not properly house trained...

crate train them...
you must go out every time with them and have soft treat rewards which you give immidiately when they pee - poop outside... (most dogs pee first thing in am.. then in to eat.. then out to run and poop).. you must be out EVERYTIME.. eventually they will associate the treats with being a reward.. (eventually you wont have to go out all the time but for training purposes you have too)

perhaps you got in over your head - too many dogs?? check your city bylaws most have rules about how many you can have.. you dont want to find out later you have too many and they will fine you or take some away...

also better food = less poop...

the next time it pees in the house show the dog where it peed then just give it a little spanky to let it know why you are doing it then catch your dog in the act and bring it outside right before it pees

Anyone who hits their dog needs their butt kicked. You can tell them no without violence.Show them what they did, not putting their nose in it but close to it and say sternly NO and take them outside and say you go potty outside and carefully and gently push their bottom down in the position where they pee pee.It worked 4 me.I would never hit my dog.Not even a little spanky as she puts it.
